I remember critiquing The Alchemist for having such one dimensional female characters and now reading this book Coelho definitely didn’t make the main character Athena one dimensional but there are times that it is quite obvious a man in writing the character of a woman. For instance, Athena at the beginning mentioned that a big part that was missing in her life was the “love of a man” (55) or the times that Coelho feels it necessary to to shove a ‘and then they talked about shopping and makeup for a bit’ piece perhaps to remind us that Athena is a woman lol.
Nonetheless, I like Coelho’s way of interweaving a narrative with more spiritual elements. And despite not agreeing with everything in the text, I like that it makes me think and question things I might not have otherwise thought of questioning. Definitely worth the read!

I really liked the ideas in this book, the way the story was told (from multiple viewpoints), and the story itself. It isn't fast-paced, but there's suspense the whole way through. I guess my only quibble with one of the ideas is that I think one can be happy without being totally satisfied. One of the main characters seems to define happiness as "a state of satisfaction," and I'd argue otherwise. I'm really enjoying all of Paulo Coelho's books.
One other idea I really like is the advice given by one of the characters: rather than burn energy in otherwise fruitless exercise, do something productive with that energy. I'd never thought of it quite that way, though my inclination has always been to do something useful with every moment. I don't have the attention span required to simply lift weights or run. Anyway, I liked that thought.

Por alguna razón que todavía no comprendo, Paulo Coelho es mi autor favorito, como he dicho muchas veces, sus libros no me deberían de gustar, su prosa y sus temas para sus libros son cosas que no me llaman la atención en cualquier autor, excepto Paulo Coelho. En este punto ya acepte que nunca voy a comprender porque Paulo Coelho es mi autor favorito, solo se que planeo leer todo lo que escriba y mi siguiente lectura fue La Bruja de Portobello.
La Bruja de Portobello relata la vida de Athena mediante la gente que la conocía bien o que no la conocía nada. Entre ellos, su madre adoptiva, un periodista, una sacerdotisa, un historiador y una actriz. Cada persona ilustra un aspecto diferente del carácter de Athena, describiendo lo que vieron y experimentaron y también compartiendo sus propias impresiones, creencias e inquietudes.
Estaba muy intrigada de leer este libro, la mayoría de los libros de este autor están enfocados principalmente en la religión entonces me llamada la atención leer algo que aunque tuviera tonos de religión, su enfoque principal fuera algo tan sencillo como narrar la vida de una persona.
Este es un libro, así como la mayoría de los de Paulo Coelho, que todos podemos encontrar algo positivo, o que todos podemos sentirnos representados en algún aspecto del libro. Como en todos los libros del autor hay una enseñanza para todos, cada quien, sin importar en el periodo de vida que este, podrá encontrarse en este libro. Y aunque todo este basado en metáforas, no es necesario ser un filosofo para entender lo que nos quiere decir.
Hay algo en la manera en la que Paulo Coelho escribe que te captiva, mantiene tu atención, y te hace reflexionar sobre ti mismo. Amo como escribe el autor, amo como logra hacerme sentir todo en pocas paginas, amo como logro identificarme en algún aspecto y me motiva a llevar una vida mejor.

Estoy muy familiarizada con la forma de escribir del autor y en este libro encontré la prosa, la historia y las enseñanzas que hicieron que me enamorara tanto del Alquimista como de este libro.

It's a good book, but it was hard to get into. I started it three times before it finally pulled me in. I will definitely read more Paulo Coehlo, but I enjoyed "By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept" more.

I became a huge fan of Coelho with Veronika decides to die, eleven minutes, and by the river piedra, but it seems to me as of late his books are desperate, with absolutely no subtlety. They are becoming tedious and boring. It is as though he is trying too hard, or maybe the point is muddled in translation.
Det var länge sedan jag läste en bok av Paulo Coelho. Dessa brukade jag uppskatta mycket när jag var yngre. Tyvärr var just denna bok inte riktigt i min smak. Sättet den är skriven på är väl uttänkt, men efter cirka halva boken tappar jag intresset tyvärr. Det var också lite väl många karaktärer att hålla reda på för mig, så blandar lätt ihop dem (i alla fall när jag lyssnar på ljudboken).
