The first thing you should know about this book is the style in which it's written. There are no chapters, merely transitions of authors as the story of the Witch of Portobello is told from the perspective of people in her life. It was unique and kept me interested as I saw her life play out from those lenses.

While I don't agree with the Mother Earth, divine spirit worship, and trances that fill the pages of this book--if you were to replace all of them with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the things of which I believe, you'd see that I relate a LOT to Athena and her quest to be herself. Athena balks at the thought of being "normal" and is constantly putting herself, and others, in new and uncomfortable situations in order to learn from each other.

A good story, lots of good thought-provoking quotes, and a twist at the end--what more could you want?

I read up to page 70 and couldn't waste any more time on a book I wasn't enjoying. This is definitely Coelho's weakest book. I found it self indulgent in the way that he is pretty much just laying out his beliefs and practices in New Age Christianity.

I just could not get into it! Sorry Paulo x

i'm going to keep going (i'm not that into it yet, but...) while it has some lovely moments and some good ideas mostly it feels like he's trying WAY too hard to be deep. And his view of women is a tad silly. it could've been good because i like the ideas/topics, so i'll give it a few more chapters, but i no longer have a lot of hope! :)

Okay. It's as close as I'm going to get. Maybe Coelho is always like this and people love him anyway. I found this preachy and annoying. Got almost 2/3s done, but there are better things out there and I'm not wasting any more time on this book. Just my two cents.

Deze man heeft betere boeken geschreven, maar het is niet dat ik me vanavond niet vermaakt heb.
