The relationships in this book are not very healthy. Granted life can be that way, and generally is, it was magic and sad. It made me want to be better than and just like.

I still can’t decide if the content of the book is good and it seems as if that’s a common response. If you are able to practice forgiveness for the characters and the damage they inflict on others as a result of their trauma you may like the book more. The author did a good job at creating a world of which I have never been a part of (rural southern USA) and managing to draw me into that world and feel as if I was living amongst the characters better than any other book has done in a long time. Sometimes the descriptive language felt a bit too flowery but I found it better just to relax and let the storyline go without to much thinking for it to be the most enjoyable reading experience.

I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did. I’m such a sucker for female friendships, mother daughter relationships, and girls growing up. This book is so lovely and so gentle and so sweet and so charming. But it is also super nuanced with darker undertones of generational trauma. I adore it. The characters are beautifully written.

It took me a while to finish this book. In the end, it was just okay. It wasn't horrible, but I'm not going to be clamoring to re-read it. I had grabbed all of the sequels and related books from the library at the same time, but I am just not finding the desire to read them now. It's a pity, since I thought I would enjoy it a lot more.

I really enjoyed this book. It made me want to sit down with my mom and ask her questions about her childhood. However, a lot of the dialogue felt unrealistic, preventing me from feeling immersed in the story. Also, it didn’t elicit the same emotional reaction from me as the short story collection before it did.
