The writing was pretty good, but it was very moralising, and I never really got into the story.
challenging hopeful lighthearted sad tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I think we can all agree Nancy is the best character

As this was my first Dickens book, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the dripping sarcasm (usually pretty funny, sometimes ridiculously over-the-top) and the fact that the language wasn't hard to follow... For some reason, I had Dickens on my head as something I'd never be able to read without having an annotated edition.
Anyway, this was definitely a good one to start out with, since it wasn't devastatingly depressing like it seems many of his other books are. Now that I've survived my Dickens orientation, though, I'm feeling like I may be capable of tackling some of those as well.

I think I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much if I hadn't listened to the audiobook. The narrator did such an incredible performance and voiced each character so well.

My absolute favorite classic. This sprawling tale spans through the trials and tribulations of the not-so-distant past. An amazing insight into Victorian England. You will want to scoop Oliver up and take him out of all the troubles that he finds himself in. A classic, coming of age story that you will treasure.

Didn't enjoy narration, will look for different audibook or read it myself

3.5 rounded up.

read this like 3 years ago and i still think about it, it was so sad but i still loved even tho he deserved better

I wanted to read this ever since my school days( had an excerpt from this novel as my English chapter).
When I started reading it...(OH THE LANGUAGE WAS KINDA HARD TO UNDERSTAND!!) MADE ME A BIT DISAPPOINTED.
BUT THE NOVEL IS SO INTERESTING THAT NOTHING CAN STOP YOU FROM READING THIS...YOU WOULD BE REALLY EAGER TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO POOR LITTLE OLIVER..and would wish that he got some love, an escape from FAGIN and others.

My favorite stories from Dickens are Great Expectation and Hard Times, but Oliver Twist wasn't bad either. I just didn't find the characters interesting enough.
