Oliver Twist was the start of all the things Dicken became famous for. Here we find the first friendless waif that begins life all wrong but ends up with happiness and love in the end. There is the perfect and lovely young woman and the noble man who finally persuades her to be his at the end, once all inconveniences are removed, There is dirty, dirty London. There is an improbable story that links all the characters togethers, shows who the true villains are and exonerated all the good characters. And, best of all, there are absolutely hideous, unforgettable villains - Sikes, Fagin, Monks -the names alone send chills up your spine.
Dickens perfected all of these elements in later books. It is fascinating to see the birth of them here.
Watching the streamlined movie versions after reading this made me realize that Dickens may not have been the best STORY teller, but rather his genius lies in his characters.

Definitely not my favourite Dickens, but it's alright
Nancy, I am so, so sorry. You didn't deserve any of it.

I. loathe. Dickens. I cannot state this with enough emphasis. His prose drags you on and is so convoluted and boring, his plots are dull and twists (despite the name) are nonexistent. To be honest- not far from simply being boring.

ui giời ơi lê lết mãi mới xong

One of my least favorite of Dicken's heroes, Oliver Twist is just too cloyingly sentimental. I much prefer Pip. But this book has some truly excellent villains!
