Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens

This was my first time actually reading Oliver Twist. It's a hard book to rate though, because while the writing was superb (of course) and I really felt for poor Oliver and wanted things to work out for him. But this was such a contrast from The Pickwick Papers and having just finished that one, I couldn't help but compare the lighter, humorous tone of Pickwick with the darker tone of Oliver.

I think this would be my fourth book by Charles Dickens and I'm so happy to say that I've enjoyed this one too. Dickens is a genius without a doubt. His way of narrating, his wit, sentiment and humor are incomparable. I'm happy to know that there's still plenty of his work that I have yet to read.

This is not my favourite classic out there ... but it's not the worst one I read either.

I liked the characters and I enjoyed the story, but there were too many characters to follow and I found myself getting confused and lost going back in the story trying to figure out who is who, especially when it came to more important characters, not just side characters.

Oliver was such a likeable character though I found myself rooting for him and when the story finally ends and he gets the good ending it made me feel so happy.

I listened to the audibook whilst I was reading and Master Bates will never not be funny to me because I am a very mature adult.

Not sure if it was the book or if it was just me but I found this book very hard to read. I feel as though there was so much filler and I was so confused half the time. It took me way longer than it should have to finish it.

I wouldn't read it again and I don't think I would recommend it, unless you like Dickens' writing.

Reading something like Oliver Twist for the first time - when the lead characters are so entrenched in our overall popular culture- is a strange thing. This is clearly early Dickens, both plot and characters lack the complexity of his later masterpieces, but the portrayal of lives lived on the edge in early 19th century London is convincing even if some of the story reads now as too melodramatic

This is the first Dickens re-read that I've done in recent years where I felt like I couldn't quite capture the magic! Obviously it's an incredible novel, and there are so many truly heart-wrenching moments and brilliant witticisms and it's an enduring classic yadda yadda, but I think what I was noticing is that while perhaps Oliver Twist is one of the better known story set-ups, Dickens has explored many of the themes here to similar effect in other novels, and ones ultimately I like better! So while I was totally glad to check this one out for the first time in nearly a decade just to see how I liked it, I wasn't swept away in the magic of Dickens's prose like I usually am. All I can say is... poor Nance!
