Buddy read with Amy!
This is another reread/finally finishing a series that I’m taking part in! And, I am really glad that this book lived up to the hype I put in my brain. This isn’t a popular series. In fact, only three of my friends have read and rated this book. Crazy, right?
The Devouring follows a broken family. Reggie is in high school and has to fill the role her mother had before she left the family. Her father is a workaholic and she had a little brother, Henry. She goes to school, cooks, cleans, takes care of her brother, and also works at a bookstore. At her job, she finds a weird journal with an insane story about Sorry Night.
Sorry Night is when the Vours can come into human bodies. Vours are demonic beings that make people live their worst fears.
Reggie doesn’t take the story seriously until she has to.
I read this book wayyy back in high school and I remember really enjoying it. Enough that I found and bought all three books. I don’t remember reading the whole series, but I must have since they’re all rated by me on Goodreads.
It was a funny and creepy book. I loved reading it in the mornings while I drink my coffee. When I had to leave for practicum or work, I couldn’t wait until the next morning so I could pick it right back up. The story was fun. The characters were great. And I can’t wait to rediscover where the rest of the books take me.

Two words. Awesome. Book. Really. Fine, three words. But still. I really enjoyed this book. Hopefully Simon Holt will write some more awesome books like this. But anyway, when I started reading this book, it was at night, before I was going to sleep, and I just got to that part where Henry/Vour causes Reggie to hallucinate tons of disgusting spiders. And because I'm the type of person to easily freak out, I was really creeped out about it. And this was right before I went to bed. So it was even worse. I actually had some nightmares, thinking that the Vours would come out and get me. The only semi-reassurance that I had was the fact that it wasn't Sorry Night so I was like, "Ok. No problem." That was before I thought: What if Simon Holt was wrong? And Sorry Night is really Jan. 7th? So...I got freaked out even more. Yea, I know, stupid me. I tend to psych myself out. But anyway, even though I was scared the entire night and couldn't fall asleep, the next day, I was reading it again. First thing in the morning. So it must mean that this book is really, really good and very addicting. This is why I encourage this book to EVERYONE. And I mean EVERYONE. This is going to be in my top 25 book list at the end of the year. Definitely.
Reggie (short for Regina) is a total horror nut. She loves scary books and movies and has introduced her younger brother, Henry, to them. (She's responsible for most of his care; their mom left and their dad works a lot.)
She works at a bookstore that sells horror/occult things pretty exclusively and when a shipment comes in, she finds a handwritten journal that she "borrows." The book details the Vours (as in, "devours," which are demon-like things that basically possess you. Your body's still there, but your personality/soul is MIA. (Think pod people.)
They can only possess you on the winter solstice (which the book calls "sorry night.")
She reads part of the book to Henry, but he freaks out. The next night (sorry night), she and her best friend perform a "fear test" as sort of a summoning for the Vours. (They face their worst fears--for her, spiders; for her friend, drowning.) But nothing happens.
Except the next morning, Henry starts acting different. REALLY different...
I really liked this book. First, Reggie is the anti-Bella. She figures stuff out for herself and she doesn't wait for anyone to save her. She realizes what's going on and--although she has friends who are helping her--she's the one who saves her brother.
There's a sequel coming out in September. I'm psyched to read it. :)

Omg, I cannot even fully express how freaky and chilling this book was. Well-written and definitely recommended. I don't even want to give the book away- just read it! Once you get started, you will not put the book down. Actually, you will, just to shake those nerves off for a second. Happy reading! ;)
The writing style of this book is mediocre at best. The dialogue is weak and the characters are shallow. The concept behind the story was interesting though, creatures taking over a human's mind and body, throwing their consciousness into a horrific dreamscape they can't escape.
When the author focuses on the dreamscape her writing improves, but it is by no means great. Some of the scenes I felt were overdone, too bloody or warped. I think if the book started off with a solid group of characters the horror would have worked for me. Instead we have the typical odd girl amazed she's gained the attention of the school jock while her male best friend is in love with her and she doesn't realize it. Please, this scenario is so overdone, come up with something original.
I'll pass on the rest of the books in this series.

This is a great creepy, quick read. Can't wait for the next installment. Great characters, great monsters, awesome.
