DID NOT FINISH: 88%

I lost interest and it was too dramatic, mopey from the Xaden, and I can predict where the plot is going. I already put off reading this book instead of starting it right away because I was not quite "feeling" the way book 2 went. So I've just hit my limit of how low my investment can be in a story before my desire to finish things loses to my indifference.

Yarros third installment falls flat many times. Parts of the novel rely heavily on readers having a deep knowledge of the continent's geography and religion, but Yarros hasn't done much to build up that knowledge in books one and two (surprising since she over explains many elements, like the functioning of her dragon riding school). We actually could have used some more exposition for the first half of the book. It really felt like she had worked herself into a corn
er. If Xaden had turned early in the book, the romance would be dead
. This feels like the prequel star wars movies, where they spent too much time drowning in galactic politics and not enough time using the force. The second half of the book has better pacing and plot points, but it ends pretty much the same as book 2
, with Xaden channeling from the earth to save Violet.
