The Only Road

Reading this with seventh graders in geography class this year. Book was very moving and informative. It will provide a lot of material for students to discuss.

When cousins Jamie and Miguel refuse to join a dangerous gang in Guatemala, Miguel is killed as retribution. But the Alphas won’t leave Jamie alone, and now they want Miguel’s sister Angela to take his place.

Knowing the only options if they stay are to join or die, the family scrapes together all their savings to get Jamie and Angela to safety in America. But it’s a long journey with many obstacles along the way. Ages 10 and up.

4.5 stars. An excellent story about immigration for middle grade readers that is based on actual events.

This book should be required reading for students and adults.

This book details the journey of two young teens making the treacherous journey from Guatemala to the United States after their family member is killed by the local gang. While the story isn’t true, it paints a vice picture of the realities that migrant children face. It also reminded me a lot of my time in Guatemala in college—the kids even visited some of the same places I did while on their journey. A necessary read for anyone unfamiliar with or wanting to learn more about migrant youth.

Beautiful story of immigration, grit, family, home. Empathy-building. YA.
