The Love Lie

Monica McCallan

4.09 AVERAGE

I liked it better the first time I read it...when it was The Fiancée Farce. This book is so eerily similar I had to check to make sure there wasn't a connection between the 2 authors. I think the big problem when you write a book that's on a subject that has already been written is that you have to write it better. This book failed to do that. It was exceedingly underwhelming. Seriously disappointed with McCallen's work here. The cute nods to Haley Cass and her works were probably my favorite part, which isn't great when you consider that this was a work of its own.

I’m usually a fan of Monica’s work but this one just didn’t work for me and the biggest reason is because I never felt a spark between the main characters. There was no build or real development of feelings, they just appeared and existed. I can also have a tendency to struggle with connecting with characters that I can’t visualize. I appreciate an author not going directly into a descriptive paragraph explaining what someone looks like, but I’d hope to be provided more than their hair color or athletic build with green eyes sprinkled throughout the first third at some point. Even mannerisms would help.

There was also no real conflict throughout the story, which along with the nearly “instant chemistry” of their relationship, made for a very low angst read, but also a little boring.

It was refreshing for a book to establish a relationship early enough in the storyline that you get to see the two characters together for more than a quick epilogue. It was also nice to have two characters actually communicate their thoughts and feelings and have a healthy supportive relationship.

Also, surprisingly, this may have been my least favorite Lori Prince narration I’ve listened to. There were a lot of characters and some inconsistencies in expected tones/pitches for some of the characters, which I think also played into my issue with dialing in on who these characters were.

Overall, easy, lighthearted, low angst story with a mature relationship and lower spice, and a challenging relationship where siblings have a common partner definitely give this a try. I will probably try again after I’ve had some time away.

Love the story! Lori Prince's screechy, high-pitched bits were too much - especially during sex scenes - and the author's misuse of nonplussed (and plussed?!) were cringe-worthy but still a 4 star read for me.
