Generally enjoyed the book. Loved the framing device of the ghost, Blanca. I wish George, Chopin, and her family had more full bodied characterizations, it felt light at times. But maybe that’s because so much is through Blanca’s perspective. I enjoyed the writing for the most part, but sometimes some phrasing or how someone would talk was too modern. But overall, very good. Got me out of a bit of a reading slump, I’m glad I read it.

CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS BOOK!

i finished Briefly, a delicious life & im between a 4/5 and a 3.5/5 because the book is relatively slow but i enjoyed the prose & the last sentence of the entire book was rly good too. it tried to tackle alot of different topics such as men in positions of power abusing it to take advantage of younger girls, sexual assault, mental health, chronic illness, sexism and xenophobia. all of which deserve the space to be fully developed and talked about- which is why im bwtn ratings
the author wrote the book beautifully but the inclusion of so many important topics rather than focusing on 1 Or 2
really took away from the impact (although it was still deeply moving and got the main message across) if tht makes sense. also i enjoyed the fact that it is indeed a sapphic ghost story that talks about longing and the relationships btwn women as lovers/ blancas yearning for george. but i wish the ending was a bit different
also liked that it is narrated by the ghost opposed to by the living which i think gives it tht really beautiful writing style

SPOILERS BELOW——

something that I wish was different in this book is the ending. I wish instead of lingering on, that Blanca was able to find peace and somehow move on bc after living for 100s of years watching over her village, the trauma of her pregnancy/birth, being taken advantage of by ham, then being abandoned by him, her death, constantly watching as men continue to take advantage of girls they way it had happened to her & then losing her last living relative. i just wish she was offered some sort of reprieve. she often mentions how tired she is of continuing on in whatever plane of existence she is in so i hoped she would be able to rest in the end. BUT i do enjoy that in some ways she was able to live on and see much more of the world than she would have been able to when she lived.
