I'm not sure how much is the book's fault that I didn't like it that much. Maybe I wasn't part of the intended audience? In any case, while parts of this book were exciting, and the mystery had its compelling moments, I found most of it dull. Harry Bosch just seemed flat to me because we never got a good look at what was going on in his head. His relationships with his daughter and girlfriend felt flat and underdeveloped, and everyone he worked with felt bland. This simply didn't have the things I look for in a novel.

As always, great guilty pleasure read.

Good read, but not one of Connelly's better books.
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

I became a fan of Connelly's Harry Bosch books about 6 months ago and have been reading (or listening) to them as fast as I can. I listened to this one. It's not up to Connelly's other HB books. The puzzle was easily figured out before the book was 1/4 finished and for the first time, the character really crossed the line of reasonable behavior. The head of the Unsolved Crimes group is no great leader, (why can't Connelly give us leaders who are reasonably qualified???), but I found myself feeling that LT would have been fully justified if he had cancelled Harry's contract. And please, Michael Connelly, give your character a bit more concern about his daughter. Even I am tired of his rationalizations and guilty comments as he leaves her alone for one more night of takeout pizza. It doesn't ring true given how much he went through to save her a few books ago.

Good basic Bosch. Reads like you've come to expect from Connelly. Only one problem - don't have a good motivation for the "savior" at the end. Will it be explained in a future book?

Great story, Bosch at his best!
emotional mysterious fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

A decent 'who done it' read. Not sure what else to say other than I enjoyed it, the cold case aspect of it and how something you think will be simple becomes complex and is resolved.

3.5 out of 5 stars
