The writing was sufficiently excellent to transport myself as the reader into the world of Washington. I appreciate Edugyan’s ability to write a compelling, dramatic story that seems well-researched. Slightly too fantastical at times and also heavily reliant on a series of massive coincidences. I also found the circumstances of Philip’s suicide puzzling and unexplained.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as a buddy read with @baje_bookclub. A story of a then young Washington Black or Wash who had his beginnings on a sugar plantation in Barbados 🇧🇧. Wash was then chosen by Christopher Wilde or Titch to assist with his inventions, which took them through the Caribbean on to London and ending with Wash finding Titch in Morocco.
This was a terrific read with a very compelling and informative storyline that drew you in. It spoke to self-invention, love and loss, betrayal, slavery and hardships.
4.75 stars from me simply because although this book touched me, it didn't evoke all the emotions that I thought it would.
