If I could give more stars I would. It’s a beautifully written lyrical story and I enjoyed every minute of it. Special thanks to my professor for recommending it!

somehow both heartbreaking and heartwarming. read this for a class im taking and loved to see the parallels between the two

This book came to me by fate. It was in one of our book boxes at work, though no one had ordered it. We didn't miss any other book, and it's a bit of a mystery how it got there.

Anyway I saw the gorgeous cover (the gold foil one, not the black and white one, but Goodreads doesn't want to use the right one for my review so far, and always switches to the other one...), and I knew I had to read it.

I went in with no expectations at all, and got a really good story! It's a story about slavery and freedom, about adventure and finding one's place. Wash was a character I easily and immediately clicked with. His master's brother is rather eccentric and scientifically interested man. He takes Wash under his wing, and when things happen at plantation, they flee into the wide world.

I have really enjoyed watching Wash grow and develope throughout the story. Titch was hard to get a grip on, but that just fit his character perfectly. He just isn't someone to keep still and settle.

I enjoyed all their adventures, and traveling around the world, though there's quite a lot of "Yep. That's very likely to have happened.." moments that just felt too far fetched or just unbelievable. Those rally took away from the story a bit, and is most of the reason for me detracting one star.

The very last but felt very sudden, rushed and doesn't really have any conclusion at all. I'm not sure what I would have preferred as an end, but I can say this isn't it. I paged back and forth a bit to make sure I didn't miss anything the way it was.

All in all still a really good read that had a great mix of harsh topics, science and adventure!

Loved it! I’ve been describing it as a 20000 Leagues Under the Sea adventure book, but from the perspective of a little boy who was born into slavery. Needless to say, it can be real heart wrenching at parts. The writing was absolutely phenomenal! And as you got to know Washington more in the story line, the writing conveyed a level of internal freedom where Washington was also getting to know himself and embrace his autonomy. Highly recommend.

Loved the writing, the story, the language, the characters ... Loved this book!

I really liked this. Washington's journey from Barbados to Morroco is filled with emotion, discovery and a certain kind of unpredictable catharsis that feels both surprising and obvious at the same time. It's so well done, I'm kicking myself for not having read this before.
