You can find this review of The Mistletoe Motive on my blog, Heart's Content!
Received an Advanced Reader’s Copy from the publisher through ValentinePR as part of the blog tour in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
The Mistletoe Motive is everything a good enemies-to-lovers lover would love. Except, perhaps because it’s set during Christmas or just because it’s Chloe Liese who’s written it, the book is sweeter than any other you’d find off the shelf in its genre. It’s sweet from the very beginning.
Without giving away too much, I can say that TMM definitely reads a little like The Hating Game and You’ve Got Mail had a baby together. I won’t lie, in the first few pages it reminded me a little too much of The Hating Game before the differences started appearing and the similarities fading. That being said, I think any grouch vs. sunshine book is going to remind us of The Hating Game *shrug*.
However, Chloe brings a lot of emotion into her stories in a way that I’m really starting to recognise. Her side characters are as well layered and complex as her protagonists and her protagonists are *chef’s kiss*. I have never had any complaints with her books and frankly I was thankful this was a novella because Chloe is the QUEEN of slow burn and angst and she’s burnt my fingers off with my own Kindle before.
Chloe and good rep are like me and food. When one exists the other has to exist. Her books are, for me, some of the most relatable work I’ve read and The Mistletoe Motive only continues to prove it. She also draws beautiful images of the coziest book store ever and I was so envious of fictional characters it was getting absurd. Truly, this book is a book nerd’s demise and we will walk into it willingly. What a way to go.

The book is a treat in every sense and I highly highly recommending this lovely, humour-filled, delicious (literally because of all the talk of food) read to anyone who wants a quick experience of Christmas before it arrives. Five stars.

A sweet little Christmas rom com that is as predictable as it is cute. You know the storyline the second the whole book starts but it plays out in a lovely little way. Easy, light, quick read that gives you exactly what you’d expect.

I fell into a reading slump while reading this but once I got more into the book I really enjoyed it.
I listened to the audiobook because it listed two narrators I enjoy, Erin Mallon and Jacob Morgan (who’s my favorite male narrator). Welllll- I hadn’t done enough research, Jacob only reads the 10 minute epilogue. I was not prepared for single POV. Erin did a great job with the narration, as she always does.
5 star narration ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The story- it REALLY had Hating Game vibes- but just didn’t grab me like that book did. And I wanted to love this book more because the heroine is neurodiverse and I think it’s important to have heroes and heroines who live on the spectrum. So the diversity gets ⭐️⭐️
But the relationship gets ⭐️- I appreciated that the hero quoted Mr. Darcy and that he observed her and accommodated for her all while she thought they hated each other. It just was overall “meh” for me. I would have loved this to be dual POV.
Although, to be fair, this Christmas I have felt more like Scrooge than I’ve ever felt, so this could be a “it’s not you, it’s me” situation in regards to this book

There was nothing fundamentally wrong with The Mistletoe Motive but it didn't really made my heart flutters either. The last two chapters felt unnecessary and the epilogue was way too cheesy.
lol this was cute until it was bafflingly awful? i was really enjoying it--the autism rep, the bookshop, the hockey of it all, but then... i HATED the resolution. yeah, you could see the mishap coming from an absolute mile away but the way the author chose to handle it was... not fun for me. i know there's probably something in there about what is satisfactory and preferred for a neurodivergent brain vs. a neurotypical brain, but... i just really did not enjoy the last third. and i never give out 1-star ratings, so that's saying something.
I mean it’s Christmas time and they both work for a charming little bookstore, that’s really all that needs to be said
3.5 rounding up. the ONLY reason why I'm docking this book is because the audio-book was only the fmc except the epilogue! and I feel like this story would've been so much MORE if there was that other POV. but the book was still great!
Favorite things:
- cat named gingerbread
- bookstore
- hockey freaking player
- supportive friends
- communication (even though it was enemies to lovers)
- banter (after they became less enemies the banter was so much better lol)
I really needed a good wholesome story this week. I can see myself listening/reading this in December! I'd also recommend this book! But know that there is some spice, but ONLY in the last chapter and epilogue.
