DID NOT FINISH: 57%

I’ve tried twice to read this, and I know I’m in the absolute minority but… I was so very bored. The writing is great, Emma is a fun narrator, and the characters are amusing. But I just had no desire to ever pick the book up.

I do hope to come back to it someday, but it’s not time for me now.

Good reader.  Excellent writing, fabulous character development.  Echos of Austen.  Romantic and witty main character with her feet on the ground.  Shelfworthy.

I heard about this book first from the Literally Reading podcast and then so many others suggested it. I could not get a copy from the local library but finally I got one from Libby.  I did love this book.  I am a Jane Austen fan--this is like Jane Austen, set in the Victorian era, with more accessible language. I loved the story of a heroine who owns a London house that has been occupied by a relative with a life estate. When she comes to London to move in, histrionics and fireworks ensue.  This is such a fun book--it is lighthearted and funny and it includes some incisive social commentary along with its humor, compulsively readable story line, and endearing or hated characters.  I will continue with the series although it is difficult to get the books from the library!

Second reading: That was better the second time. I picked up on so many Easter eggs.

That was quite fun. Nothing Earth shattering, but Emma is a hoot. I don't like the journal format for telling a story, and so it gets one less star for that, but I'll keep reading the series.
