I have no idea why I like this book so much. I find that it is a very quick, oddly comforting book to pick up when I want something like that to read.
Wow, I finished this last month and never wrote a review of it. It was recommended by a friend and I think it was a good choice for me. Admittedly, some of the tech stuff went over my head, but I got enough of it to get the main point of the book. Coupland is often witty and the book is full of odd ball characters. I actually found the writing to be a little bit like Bret Easton Ellis, stylistically.
meh. typical finding myself fiction wrapped in geek culture. was probably spiffy in 97 when it came out. now it's like the backstory of everyone I know, lol.
This was a surprisingly interesting book that really encapsulated the feeling of being present during the tech boom of the early 90’s. I think it was really helped along by being told from the point of view of a 30 year old man’s journal entries about his day to day. While this is first and foremost a story of personal growth and coming of age of a number of coworkers as they move from a prolonged adolescence to what is starting to resemble adulthood, there is also a great glimpse into the Silicon Valley of the early technology era. California tech was booming and everyone wanted a piece, but how does one manage a personal life when coding at a computer for 12-14 hours a day and spending all of your waking moments with the same 7 people? I especially enjoyed how a couple of the characters come to terms with who they truly are and grow among their peers throughout this novel. It’s funny how it seems we all have this “ah-ha” moment at some point in our 20s/30s where we find acceptance in who we are and decide to be that person to the world regardless of what the world think and this novel contains a few of those types of stories.
This was an interesting book that I felt like I should have read about ten years ago. The novel chronicles the struggles of a group of Microsoft employees who move to Silicon Valley to form a software startup. Each of the characters has their own particular issue with identity, and much of the narrative is devoted to the question of what makes each of us unique as individuals.
Coupland does an amazing job of capturing the personalities of twentysomething tech employees as well as the zeitgeist of the pre-dot-com boom era. The only real criticisms I had about the book were its occasional dashes of pretension as well as its all too neat-and-tidy ending, but these were pretty minor in comparison to the novel's virtues.
I felt like I'm someone who's largely moved past a lot of the issues that the book raises, but as someone who was starting to become involved in the software industry during the time period this novel was set, it brought back a lot of nostalgia.

Решил слегка перезагрузиться после штудий, взял книгу знаменитой оранжевой серии, которая хоть и отличалась зачастую очень плохим переводом, но... АААА КРОВЬ ИЗ ГЛАЗ!!!!1
Плохой перевод, очень плохой перевод, хуже перевести почти невозможно, омерзительный перевод, переводчик вообще не понял, что он переводил, более того, кажется, даже не пытался понять. За такие переводы показана электрошоковая терапия, как в "Кукушкином гнезде", ведро с крысами, как в "1984", все Египетские казни плюс 20 процентов сверху.
А сама вещь очень хорошая, особенно последняя глава.

Пере (про?) читал. Читал ранее, брал в библиотеке в плохом переводе. Этот, действительно, куда более достойный. И некоторые ноты в душе само повествование затрагивает.
Фактически, эта волна нас догнала сильно позже и не так, но ощущение "с 20 до 30 подари большую часть своей жизни корпорации" довольно свежо для меня - потому что работать без самоотдачи, это, считай, не работать. А эти все гики - лишь антураж. Хотя... я всё ещё охочусь за первой моделью GameBoy, мы пересматриваем "Вавилон-5", я взялся учить новый язык... программирования и я действительно считаю, что новая техника всё хуже и хуже.

Book holds up (and is a fast read). Though it's odd to see references to a bit of software NOT meant to go on the Web -- not to mention someone changing a tape in a Walkman.
