It is interesting to see some of the parallels that the early 90s had with modern day (2016-ish) startup culture. The only difference is the reversal of Microsoft and Apple being hip and cool; apparently Apples had a slightly older workforce, and it was "hipper" to be working for Bill Gates than Apple.
I barely remember the details of this book, but I remember it being a bit lighter than the authors other books, though still evoking something of a mood of hopelessness. A powerful read for the "geek" set, since it seemed to do a decent job of capturing the world of those who choose the IT/Development path.

Not as fun as Coupland's more recent novels, and not even all that much about Microsoft culture. It's more about Silicon Valley and the frenetic mindset rising out of it.
I grew up near SV and shared a lot of these views. Was obsessed with starting a business, seemed like everybody I knew in college had one or was starting one. Strange to see it from the outside.

I think if I had read this back in the 90s I would have given it five stars. It's a little dated and someone not into geek culture might not have gotten a lot of it. I'm looking forward to reading more Coupland (this is the first thing of his I've ever read) and I may change the rating after I've read more.
Really a 4.5, just doesn't quite make it to amazing.
That said, I really, really, really loved this book!

I think this may be my favorite book. Growing up in the digital age, technology has been everything to me. It was a game, it was education, it was friendship, it was confusion and hurt and it was also a site of love and connection that made me feel like I understood a little bit of life better. For a kid who grew up building things in the digital space, giggling and cheating and dying and living, this book almost perfectly captures what it is to be human, to me. How does living go on, when you’re not sure you have a life?
