I think if I had read this back in the 90s I would have given it five stars. It's a little dated and someone not into geek culture might not have gotten a lot of it. I'm looking forward to reading more Coupland (this is the first thing of his I've ever read) and I may change the rating after I've read more.

Really a 4.5, just doesn't quite make it to amazing.

That said, I really, really, really loved this book!

Fun novel in Coupland's trademark surreal style.

I think this may be my favorite book. Growing up in the digital age, technology has been everything to me. It was a game, it was education, it was friendship, it was confusion and hurt and it was also a site of love and connection that made me feel like I understood a little bit of life better. For a kid who grew up building things in the digital space, giggling and cheating and dying and living, this book almost perfectly captures what it is to be human, to me. How does living go on, when you’re not sure you have a life?

This book was everything to me in 1995. It’s my only regret that I didn’t see this as the only signal I needed to move to Palo Alto or Redmond. Or major in CS and HCI. Or become a published writer by now.

This is a book that would be in my time capsule and heirlooms for my future generations.

I read this back in the day - in hard cover form! - and remember it struck me as an anthem to everything that was/is wrong with corporate culture not just geek life. The all absorbing work of making money for somebody else and the empty existence it provides us in exchange. It begged the question "why?" And I'm not sure that we've really answered it.

Funny yet emotional; nostalgic yet still actual.
