I started this book back in 2018 but did not get to finish it as I got as an e-book sample. Than as I was searching a bookstore I was reintroduced and I instantly picked it up thinking I remember this, the book I didn’t get to finish and loved. From chapter one the book is a hit and the reader won't be displeased and will be craving more. Even as a 13 year old I loved this book, I would definitely recommend it

Based on Mayan mythology Zane has a volcano in his backyard that hides the entrance to Xib’alb’a one day he sees a plane crash into the volcano and glimpses the face and it’s either a really good Halloween costume or an actual zombie. Zane has been home-schooled but has been accepted into Holy Ghost school, there he meets Brooks who tells him his life is tied to a prophecy and he's in the centre of it.

Action packed, full of adventure, the readers will journey with Zane and explore the best parts of Mayan mythology. This was a great introduction for me to the Rick Riordan Presents imprint.

This book is probably best written for kids 10+

Also this book includes a pronunciation guide on the gods, goddesses and places that appears in the book.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned a ton about Mayan myths (though holy K, talk about gruesome at times!). I loved the story and the character depth. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Quite enjoyed this book and the mythology, but for me it wasn't as funny as the rick riordan books, which is a big thing I read for, and I didn't love it.

Not gonna lie, this one was a real slog for me in places.
Zane and I have very different ideas of what is a good question to ask at any particular moment, which usually means that when Zane asks a question, I am incredibly frustrated.
"Why would you ask that when the obvious thing to ask is this!" I growl.
"That has nothing to do with what you're doing, ask about this other thing instead!" I wail.
"PLEASE ASK ABOUT THIS OBVIOUS PLOT HOOK AND JUST GET ME SOME INFORMATION!" I plead.

It made for a aggravating read.
Also, at the end
Spoilera pretty big plot twist is revealed terribly. The book says,
"Ixtab went on to tell me how she'd been working undercover with my dad for weeks." Why would you reveal it that way? Why not just have Ixtab say that and show me? Do it in dialogue and it packs so much more punch. I almost missed this tidbit because it was revealed so offhandedly.

I did really like getting into the mythology, though, that was pretty cool.

There were two times that I really felt engaged with this book. One was the first time in the Empty and the other was in the Old World. I love the idea that there are ancient places that are abandoned and sleeping, and I love liminal spaces.
I love liminal spaces so much that I will probably read the second one just to see where Hurukan is, but for most of the book, I was thinking that I wouldn't read more of them.

This is a "Rick Riordan" presents book. It should definitely appeal to kids who like his books. I think this was well-written and fast-paced. It is appropriate for upper elementary and most likely will hold the attention of even some high school readers. I mostly enjoyed the audio book. The narrator was decent- but a little nasaly.
