This book is a great introdution into the mythos of the Mayas and it made me want to learn more about the mythos as a whole. Which is what I will be doing asap.
Meh.
This was a pretty good book and a solid 4 stars. I only think this is 4 stars because it really needed some originality. There were so many things copied from other books that in some parts, it was a bit hard for me to get through. Also, this didn't really grab me in as I expected it to, but it was decent.
Since this is a Rick Riordan Presents book, I feel obliged to compare it to his books. Unfortunately, while there is cool mythology stuff here, The Storm Runner doesn't stack up to his content.
Quick list of nitpicks/things I noticed off the top of my head:
-Zane follows a girl because she's the most beautiful person he's ever seen! ...Really. Surely he could've had a better reason than that.
-There are a lot fewer pop culture references than what you'd find in, say, one of the Heroes of Olympus books. That's a plus, since too many of those gets annoying.
-The writing is fine, but not amazing. The voice for the main protagonist seems pretty accurate, but in general the book wasn't as chuckle-worthy as one of Riordan's things.

This is the type of story I wanted when I heard Rick Riordan was making his own imprint. It reminds me so much of the original Percy Jackson series with its adventure, humor, and lovable characters. Even without the comparison to PJO, The Storm Runner is a great book and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading! I wasn't the biggest fan of Aru Shah and I was a little hesitate going into this book because I was worried it would be another miss for me, but I'm glad to say it wasn't. Right from the start I was sucked into the story. Zane is such a wonderful character. He is a such caring and loyal person who is willing to risk a lot to protect those he cares about. His relationship with his mother reminds me a lot of Percy's and his mom and I loved seeing his uncle Hondo have such a big role. I genuinely enjoyed meeting all the side characters and learning about Mayan mythology. J C Cervantes has written a great start to a duology (series?) and I will be eagerly waiting for the next installment!

Soo, tbh i almost DNF this book because i didn't feel very much attached to the main character Zane Obispo
But regardless of that, i still pretty much enjoy reading this book. Because of the Mayan Mythology, disabled main character, and that awesome adventure.
I can't wait for the second and third book to arrive at my house. Maybe after reading the other books i can change my mind and my rating can change

I love mythological middle grade fantasy and this book was no exception. I appreciated the representation of a disabled character (however, the disability needing to be magic to be accepted isn't a great message). This could also be read as accepting his disability is what is magical, but that doesn't exactly feel true. I love the close relationships between Zane and his family (including Ms. Cab and Mr. O) since it shows community spirit and unconventional family structures. Maya mythology is not familiar to me but I was able to keep up with the relationships between the gods, the role of prophecy, the side characters, etc. throughout the story.
The one gripe that I have is Brooks felt very flat and lacking personality. I couldn't get a read on who Brooks was as a person and this made the closeness between her and Zane feel very forced and one-dimensional. Zane mentions how beautiful she is a lot but not much else about her actual personality. Perhaps the flaw I saw in her character was caused by Zane's singular focus on her beauty.

I really wanted to like this, but the worldbuilding, writing style, and characters all fell super flat for me. Dnf at page 193.
