This was a highly enjoyable read reminiscent of Percy Jackson. The characters were engaging and relatable and their story felt authentic. A very good read.
Great start to a series, and has a definite Rick Riordan type vibe, but not quite as good.
Realized I was still trying to read this because I felt I ought to and I'm officially giving up. DNF 40%

Main character Zane Obispo is a great kid. He’s considerate, caring, bullied at school because he walks with a cane, and is catapulted into a world-shaking adventure one day after releasing a demon. His wonderful his rescue dog, Rosie, disappears while helping him while on said adventure. To fix matters, he must travel with a shapeshifter, Brooks, and his enthusiastic, wrestling-loving uncle, Hondo, and deal with duplicitous godborn/demigods, and any number of other wonderful and terrible people and things.
The action and humour are fast, and I loved Zane. I also really liked his older neighbour, Mrs. Cab, who spends some time transformed into a chicken.
This was a really enjoyable melding of Mayan myths with contemporary settings and attitudes, and fun characters.

I really liked this book it is always nice to read about a mythology that is not Greek or Roman. I really liked the characters especially Zane and Brooks I found them both to be easy to like characters their motivations were easy to understand. Zane is an easy to like character he is a boy judged for something that is not his fault who then finds out he is so much more than he ever dreamed. I really liked that he would go above and beyond for his dog Rosie I liked how that ended up. I really liked the plot it started with a boy and his dog with that boy losing his dog and finding things about himself he would never of put together on his own. So overall I really liked this book I will for sure read the sequel.
Zane Obispo is about to be introduced to the world of Mayan gods. During his first day at his new school, he meets a girl named Brooks who tells him that he is destined to release the Maya god of death from his prison. Zane doesn't believe her until his faithful rescue dog Rosie dies protecting him from a demon runner that tries to make Zane free its master. Adventure ensues when Zane decides to rescue Rosie from the Mayan underworld, but how can he rescue his dog when he can't walk well without a cane? Zane will discover more about himself and his world than he ever thought possible.
Zane Obispo is just your normal kid living in the desert at the bottom of a volcano. Then a demon crashes a plane into the volcano and he discovers he is part of a Mayan prophecy. Zane is destined to release the god Au-Puch from his prison in the volcano and set about the destruction of the world. To help him on his journey to kill Au-Puch he has a narwal named Brooks and his uncle Hondo. Plus there are Mayan gods on his side. Of course the rest of the Mayan gods want to kill him for not only releasing Au-Puch but for being the son of a god.
I think kids are really going to enjoy this book in the Rick Riordan Presents series. It has a lot of action, great mythology and a fantastic main character. I loved that Zane has a bum leg and is not as able bodied as most kids. I also liked that this is Mayan mythology instead of the regular Greek or Norse. It is interesting to learn about different mythologies and I think the kids reading this will benefit from it. What I didn't like so much was that these books are starting to feel very formulaic. There is a kid who is the child of a god. There is a prophecy of doom. There is a quest. There are supernatural beings assisting the hero. There were a few breaks from the formula but for the most part this book follows the same script as a lot of the mythology based middle grade novels out there right now. That being said kids won't care and will read anything with Rick Riordan's name on it.
This book will be published in September 2018.

This book was good! I don't typically read books for this age group, so it was hard for me to pick a rating. But I felt like this book did a great job of showing Mayan deities to children who have probably not heard of them (giving room for them to do their own investigation and research).
