Set in Italy and beginning in the first half of the twentieth century, this story revolves around the narrator tracing the life of her family, principally her grandmothers and mostly her paternal grandmother. A poetic, passionate and lonesome woman, the narrator's paternal grandmother is considered mad by her village for her passions and the ways she expresses them through words, and she goes for years unmarried because of this. Finally, she's married to a widower that momentarily lives with her family and then couple moves to the city of Cagliari. But even though the marriage is a respectful one and suits both partners, it is still lacking in the ardour she longs for. It is until she leaves for kidney stone treatment in Civitavecchia where she meets a disabled World War two veteran that she finds the passion she's long desired.
The writer's managed to do so much with such few pages, the possibilities she offers almost as the story ends and the ending itself was incredibly done.

Uma historia geracional em que uma neta conta a historia da sua avó, uma mulher fora do seu tempo numa Sardenha atrasada no tempo, que espera encontrar o amor mas continua a escapar-lhe, acabando por fazer um casamento de conveniência com um homem mais velho. Mais tarde conhece um homem, também casado, numa clinica onde está em tratamento e apaixona-se por ele mas volta para casa ao fim do tratamento mas passa o resto da vida a pensar nesse homem. A neta descobre a sua historia através do seu diário que escrevia as escondidas e que se encontrava escondido. Uma mulher que passou ao lado da sua vida, que viveu mais na sua própria cabeça do que na realidade. Um final surpreendente. Gostei do filme com a Marion Cotillard mesmo com as alterações feitas.

Because in love, perhaps, in the end you have to trust magic - it's not as if you can find a rule, something to follow to make things go well, like the Commandments.
GR friend Melanie's effusive praise of this book tilted me towards an impulse purchase a few weeks ago. How lucky I am I followed that impulse. This is a gorgeous novella, and it deserves all the praise heaped upon it.
But what I really want is for a bunch of people to read it so that we can talk about those last two pages betwixt spoiler tags and its impact on the narrative, the themes, the magnitude of love. WHAT AN ENDING!!!!

Man könnte meinen, es ginge hauptsächlich um die Oma, deren Leben von ihrer Enkelin erzählt wird. Irgendwie geht es aber auch um Familie, um Liebe, um Leidenschaft und - ja - auch um Häuser. Sie alle beschreiben ein Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit und des Zuhauseseins, das leider nicht immer so gut funktioniert wie gewünscht. Erwartungen sind.. schwierig.
Die Geschichte der Oma spielt um das Ende des zweiten Weltkrieges herum auf Sardinien und begleitet sie durch ihren Wunsch nach besonderer Liebe, die sie sehr kreativ festhält, obwohl ihr Dorf sie für diese angebliche Verrücktheit am liebsten wegsperren würde. Sie war da einfach nicht zurückhaltend genug. Den erstbesten, den das nicht abschreckte, musste sie heiraten. Je nachdem wen man fragt, zu ihrem Glück oder ihrem Unglück, denn nur dadurch entsponn sich später eine wirkliche Liebesbeziehung, die hier aber noch nicht verraten werden soll.
All die Familiengeschichten der verschiedenen Jahrzehnte speisen sich aus dem liebevollen Blick und dem Wissen der Enkelin und lässt mich selbst die schwierigen Verwandten wirklich gern haben, was mir doch eher selten passiert.
Si potrebbe pensare che il libro si tratti principalmente della nonna, la cui vita è raccontata dalla nipote. Ma in qualche modo si tratta anche di famiglia, di amore, di passione e - sì - anche di case. Descrivono tutti un sentimento di appartenenza e di essere a casa, che purtroppo non sempre funziona come desiderato. Aspettative familiari sono... difficili.
La storia della nonna si svolge verso la fine della seconda guerra mondiale in Sardegna e la segue attraverso il suo desiderio di un amore speciale, che cattura e descrive in modo molto creativo, anche se il suo villaggio preferirebbe rinchiuderla per questa presunta follia. Per loro non era abbastanza discreta. Ha dovuto sposare la prima persona che non si è lasciata scoraggiare. A seconda di chi chiedi, a sua fortuna o a sua infelicità, perché è l'unico modo in cui una vera relazione d'amore poteva svilupparsi in seguito, cosa che non voglio ancora rivelare.
Tutte le storie di famiglia dei diversi decenni sono alimentate dallo sguardo amorevole e dalla conoscenza della nipote e mi fanno amare molto anche i parenti difficili, cosa che mi capita raramente.
