I just couldn't find my way with the writing style. Even though I understand the link between the writing style and schizophrenia, it was just not for me

'I also need to talk about how life has a shape and a size, and how it can be made to fit into something small –like a house.'

I always seem to give books with heartwarming endings a lower rating. So cold.

The good:
- There were some good quotes in this
- I read it pretty quickly so it was quite a page-turner
- Matts version of schizophrenia was interesting
- The way it was Matt's story- an account written by him.

The bad
- There was quite a few incidences where I was getting lost in the past/present tense.
- Generally a bit confused about some of the plot line
- I wouldn't say this was necessarily an original book. It's a basic recipe with some different ingredients thrown in.
- Why wasn't Jacobs character made a bigger thing all the way till the end of the book? That was my fave part of the story- their friendship.
- Some bits were okay but overall it was a bit boring and I've not come away thinking lots of interesting thoughts about mental illness. Just a bit meh really. Not many layers.
- Boring happy ending.

I felt a little underwhelmed by this book. It was a nice, easy read but I felt there could have been more suspense and development of characters especially the parents.

The narrator manages to let you join him in his head throughout this story. Astonishing!

I found this book while looking for unreliable narrators for an English teacher. It was too mature for her target audience, but just right for me to enjoy.
The first thing I noticed was the great mix of text/font styles and drawings. This enhanced the disjointed feeling of participating in the narrator's schizophrenic episodes and memories. The main character was sympathetic and the family's grief at the loss of their eldest son rang true.
This would be a great discussion book for all those reasons.
