I re-read this one today - it was a gift from a precious friend and I adore it for multiple reasons, one of which is that I still struggle with the fear of creating and putting my creations on view to people other than myself. Thinking over everything the book expresses and combining these thoughts with those from Holly Ringland’s book ‘The House that Joy Built’ among others and trying yet again to move through what keeps me stuck creating art where only I can see it.

I sat in a local independent bookstore today with a friend awaiting an author who would be doing a reading. We had already made the rounds of the store and had a stack of books in front of us so large that we knew we could not buy all of them. I went to get us coffee, discovered this little book on the counter, and added it to the stack. I have seen and loved these wonderful posts from Neil Gaiman on his social media with their hand-written appearance and the wonderful drawings by Chris Riddell. So finding a book full of them was pure joy. I ended up reading parts aloud to my friend, taking a picture of a page and posting it on Facebook, finishing the book, and (of course) buying it because I knew I'd want to see it again and share it.

The table of contents shows the book divided into four sections (Credo; Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading, and Daydreaming; Making a Chair; and Make Good Art) Almost every page can be read alone and considered separately, then they can be read together to make up a section, and finally the book comes together as a whole as well.

I usually start my reviews of Gaiman's books with a statement that I don't like the genre or this isn't something I usually read, and then I go on to say how it was still fantastic and still drew me in. This one didn't fit that mold. Having seen the posts done in the same style and wanting to be able to collect them into a book, I jumped at this one. It did not disappoint.

If you go to google images and search "neil gaiman such a thing as a bad book" you will get to see an example of a page from the book - and one that I have loved for a long time.

Excellent, quick read with lovely illustrations by the brilliant Chris Riddell. Each part struck a different chord, and inspired something different in me. I had this out on loan from the library, but now need to own a copy so I can be inspired by it whenever I need an energizing few moments.

An inspiring collection of essays by Gaiman extolling the importance of ideas, art, and always working towards creating the art/writing that one wants to create, illustrated by Chris Riddell. These were delightful.

“Make interesting, amazing, glorious, fantastic mistakes,
Break rules,
Leave the world more interesting for you being here.
MAKE GOOD ART.”

Nice, inspiring read! Great collaboration between author and artist.

Fabulous collection of 4 short essays by Neil Gaiman, superbly illustrated by Chris Riddell. Every page is a joy to look at and read. Sheer perfection.

A wonderful little book!!!!
