I wouldn't have purchased the book, if I had seen it in person first. There are 3 or 4 brief statements (I don't think any of which qualifies as an essay) by Neil Gaiman about living as an artist. I felt that the illustrations took away from the text, and would have preferred to read a text-only version. It would have filled about 3 pages of 12pt type.
More power to anyone who feels inspired or motivated by this friendly author's kind and optimistic words. Neil is often worth hearing, and the 3 stars are for his sentiments - a couple of which are revelatory and interesting.

Neil Gaiman is a wonderful motivator and his appreciation for libraries and librarians makes my heart sing.

"I suggest that reading for pleasure, is one of the most important things one can do. I'm making a plea for people to understand what libraries and librarians are, and to preserve both of these things. "

"I was lucky. I had an excellent local library growing up, and met the kind of librarians who did not mind a small, unaccompanied boy heading back into the children's library every morning and working his way through the card catalog, looking for books with ghosts or magic or rockets in them, looking for vampires or detectives or witches or wonders."

Neil Gaiman never ceases to amaze with his eloquently powerful writing and this book serves as much.

In a manifesto on art, all kinds of art but mostly the passion of it, for a writer, for a reader, Gaiman explains how it's not just important but essential and dutiful to make good art and to share it.

I've always believed that the essence of living with passion is to live with art and this book just confirmed it.

You may wonder why not pick other books on the matter, right? Maybe other authors said more about it? But Neil Gaiman's style adds to it all the more. And this book can be quoted start to finish without a doubt.

The kind of book you'd want to sit in your library and read aloud for others.

A book I'll always hold close to my heart.
