Neil Gaiman encourages artists to "make good art when things get tough" although I'm not convinced "good" is complex enough an adjective in this case.

There are four essays in this book, all in some form or another about Gaiman's worldview and thoughts on creativity, censorship, the importance of art, and the difficulties of it. I found it interesting, strongly-worded, and was impressed that he didn't appear to hide behind his language, and stated his beliefs plainly enough that someone who disagreed with him would have no trouble articulating that disagreement. I've kept Art Matters near my desk for a few lines in the essay "Make Good Art," which was the essay for which I bought the book and the one I found most personally inspiring. I'd recommend anybody read it at least once, but also note you can find at least the latter essay, as it was originally a graduation speech, online in full for free (as a pdf and I believe as a full recording).
A smart small book with great ideas. The illustrations brought out the life from the words.
Simple, nicely illustrated, and absolutely wonderful. Highly recommended to anyone who loves reading, writing, or making any kind of art, especially someone who needs a little encouragement for their art.
Something that everyone into reading and writing must have and read!! It has beautiful illustrations, too.

I thought this would just be a coffee table book with minimal content but it kinda blew me away. Lot’s of very good advice and thought shoved into a tiny book. There was a bit of a jump from the first bit to the second half but not a huge deal since it’s basically a collection of thoughts.
