Vincent is hands down one of my most favorite male characters Mary Balogh has ever written. This story was so entirely sweet and lovely and adorable- I could squeal.

This is my second Mary Balogh read, and omg did I fall in love with this book! It was so sweet, from start to finish!
It barely took me 10 pages to fall head over heels for Vincent, Viscount Darleigh and truly the sweetest man to live! His friendship with Martin had me hooked, and the funny dialogues had me turning every page! I have a soft spot for underdogs, and Vincent despite having lost his sight in battle, is the equivalent of a golden retriever!
I fell in love just as fast with Sophia, a quiet wallflower who had so much she wanted to say. Their first meeting is the cutest. I have the softest spot for invisible characters being noticed by their future love, and Vincent indeed notices Sophia, from a single spoken word.
And then they meet yet again, and their first actual conversation truly seals them as soulmates, to me. It felt like a warm hug. They easily get along and converse comfortably, for two people who usually have trouble being in such a big croud.
But, due to circumstances, Vincent finds himself offering a marriage deal to Sophia. An equal deal for both of them, he assures. He offers her security, and he gets to escape his family's arranged marriages. Vincent, never the type to dwell too much on the future, offers to keep up their marriage for a year, before they go their seperate ways and enjoy the indepedant life they both craved.
What follows after is the sweetest love story ever, in what I would call a soulmate bond. It's soft
and fluffy, and I understand that it might be too slow for some readers, but I absolutely loved their domestic bliss, and I did not want to finish this book or put it down! Their humour and jokes were so cute and funny, and their storytelling was so amusing. Again, they were the sweetest soulmates!
We slowly see Sophia growing into a more confident version of herself, and we see how much change she introduces into Vincent's life, and how that helps him get closer to his independant self (Though he is to be credited for his inner growth as well). I loved how sweet and attentive Vincent was to Sophie, and I loved the way she was just as attentive and sensible to his feelings and pride.
I loved the lowkey angst woven into the story, not too overbearing, but just there in the background. Both of them aware of their love, believing the other still harbours dreams of an independant life alone, but both of them are determined to live through these happy memories and cherish the present they have together :(
It was so sweet whenever he asked her if she was happy :(( I loved them together so so much
He turned to her and kissed her.
"It must be bed time" he said. "Am I right?"
"You are right," she said without turning her head to consult the clock.
His very favourite time of the day. (ah, my favourite inside joke)
I also loved the representation of panic attacks and ptsd, and how it was more than just a one time occurence. I loved the backstory with George :(((
If I had to nitpick, I'd say that some parts felt a little dragged and maybe not that necessary to include in the story? But it didn't lessen my joy reading this sweet book.
This also had me fall in love with the rest of the Survivors' Club! Hugo and Gwen were so precious, I want to read about them falling in love~

I’m glad I gave the series another go. The first book, I REALLY didn’t like, and while this wasn’t my favourite book of all time, by the end, my heart feels full and I’m completely content with what I just read. I’m still most interested in Ben (was that his name, the man with crutches and a dream to dance again) because he seems so, so strong and I know he’s definitely struggling if no one has heard from him at all and it’s just made me so much more invested in him, and I didn’t even SEE him in this book, just mentions that he wasn’t available. God I’m itching to read it. It better not be the last book lol - YAY, just looked and he’s next.

Maybe I do need a bit of drama?
Está bien, pasable. Empieza muy bien pero no hay tensión y ya se hacía un poquito pesado hacia el final.
This is a tender and sweet romance, but it is also one that lacked an emotional impact for me. I never felt a particular connection to the characters. I pitied their situations and was happy that they found each other and overcame their challenges, but I never felt that there was any doubt that they would. I know, it's a romance novel, of course they are going to get a happy ending, but there should at least be some suspense about how it's going to happen. There wasn't any suspense or concern. I never worried.
