While I don't read Jodi Picoult for fine literature, this was not her best work. There were just too many "come on" moments in this book and I didn't have much sympathy for the protagonist. That made it hard to care about the outcome of the book. Not her finest hour.
Another excellent Picoult book! Her signature twist at the end is just enough to keep you guessing.
it felt like the big twist was a quarter of the way through the book and I just didn’t care to read on
While this book was not my favourite of Jodi's, it wasn't horrible. It was difficult to read at times, when told from the child's perspective. A lot of the details were very cliche, and I had a hard time connecting to Nina. Her actions were so selfish the entire book, yet she was convinced in some twisted way, she was doing what was best for her son. I also wish that we could have heard a little more from her husband.
2.5 stars
I've read quite a few of Picault's books and honestly never feel entirely satisfied with them in the end. I suppose that means I should stop reading them, but they are always somehow engaging and bring up thought-provoking topics.
In the case of this book, however, I found myself constantly annoyed with nearly all of the characters and also with the writing, which was just too over-the-top sometimes. Picault LOVES her similes and metaphors but some of them are just ridiculous, especially when they are used in really serious situations. I wish I had marked some of them down, but alas, I forgot:)
The story centers around a family of three with a very young boy. I don't want to give too much away, but something bad happens and the whole family is fractured as a consequence.
In typical Picault manner (though in this case it felt a little too staged), the ending offers perfect conclusion. I felt it was awkward and stilted and unrealistic, but maybe I just stopped caring much at this point to find much merit.
I will say, the premise of the book is an interesting one and it is written in a way that you want to know what happens, especially as there are several twists along the way, though not all are satisfying.
If you are a huge Picault fan, then you might get more enjoyment from this book, but I would recommend her books "Nineteen Minutes" or "The Storyteller" before this one.

Read and listened to this gem. I have had this book on my shelves for 10 years... do not ask me why it took me so long to read it! It was great! I loved the audio and the actual reading. It was thought provoking and I could not stop thinking about what was going on. Such a realistic story.. a little until the end lol. But sooooo good. Jodi you did it again!

The idea to put such a crime together with a mother`s love and how far she is willing to go to make sure her child is alright is absolutely crazy good.
While I had troubles getting through it, I persevered, and was rewarded. This book is very well written, and by the end you really know the characters, and understand what they have done to a point.
The only thing that really got me was the ending, but I will let all those who have yet to read it think it over once they are done; but I will say that it seemed a little...far-fetched, though it is possible.
Full of surprises. Full of sad but amazing moments.
