3 stars. i dont know if i oversold the ending in my review of the stolen air or if this book just lost all momentum. either way i was disappointed in where this book went. the pacing was quite slow for me. i didn’t love the pov switch to oak. i really enjoyed wren’s complexities in the first book and we didn’t get to see any of that without her pov

this was miles better than the stolen heir but this entire duology was so underwhelming in comparison to the trilogy

2.5 to be fair and maybe it’s more of a 3.5 star book but I am just so frustrated at how hyped I was and how mehhh it was. That’s all I got. A big fat meh!

when this book was over, i wanted to give it 3 stars. unfortunately, i'm simply incapable of rating holly black so low.
i managed some quality escapism with this book but that doesn't mean i was happy. the third person POV was slightly disorienting, considering the first book's tonality. although i understand writing wren's POV would've revealed some plot points otherwise kept hidden, i do rather wish we had some of the chapters in her POV because i felt alienated from her and did not care as much for their romance as i did in the previous book.
that said, i LOVED being back in elfhame and getting to see my babies, jude and cardan (cardan's canonically good with kids!!!). i smell a short story spinoff of them visiting nicasia in the undersea and if that's true, I CAN'T WAIT!
3.5 stars
