I adored this novel by Madeline Martin, with well-drawn characters, a harrowing setting, careful pacing, and gorgeous prose. Grace's journey is a testament that we don't have to "save the world" to do our bit, that we can make a difference for the people around us, no matter how big or small our circle or how timid we might feel at the outset.

If you are a fan of historical fiction, this is another book along the same vein as The Light in Hidden Places. It doesn’t skirt around the hardships of the war, but rather shows the strength that can be born from grief and enduring the various trials of wartime.

Told through the lens of a young woman in London during WW2, we see how war affected those who were home throughout the war. I loved this because it was something I hadn’t considered. Homes and businesses were lost. People had to sleep in bunkers. People that were unable to enlist were still of use in rationing their food, planting vegetable gardens and helping stop fires and account for people in bombing raids.

Grace Bennis had intended to work at a little book shop for merely a resume opportunity before moving onto her dream job, but through her experience bringing the shop back to shape, she learns how books can transport you out of even the most awful of circumstances.

I will be recommending this book to everyone. I LOVED it!

An easy, historical fiction read about a young woman who begins working at a bookshop as World War II is on the rise.

I wouldn’t say it was the most powerful historical fiction book I’ve ever encountered but it was full of hope, courage, and nods to beloved classic literature titles that made my bookworm heart sing.
