Sweet tale in unprecedentedly horrible times. When reflected through the lens pf our modern pandemic, seeing the people of London come together and support each other and help one another, it makes me wonder what has happened to society to make us so divergent.I'm not saying there weren't terrible things that happened but that "make do and mend" attitude is seriously lacking in today's world.
At the beginning of this book, I was a little bored and considered abandoning it. But the more I read the more I fell in love with the characters, and I felt all of the pain that they felt during the war. I also loved how Grace discovered a love for reading and passed on that love for reading during the war. All in all this was a beautiful tribute to the power of literature to overcome tragedy in your life.

I almost DNF’d this book. I picked it up as part of a book flight from the library, I didn’t have my glasses on so could only read the title, and thought it sounded interesting. I don’t typically do WW2 as entertainment stories, but figured I try it. It seemed too sweet and proper. More prim than a Hallmark movie. I am glad I gave this book a chance. I didn’t know I needed this story right now. It was still sweet and prim and proper, but it all worked in the end and hit all the check boxes for me. A persevering heroine + a curmudgeonly bookshop owner + a rescued tabby cat + books galore in London during near-nightly bombings and devastation = near perfection! Your mileage may vary of course, but today, this book worked for me.
2 stars / fiction
I found this book disappointing- dull, cliche, no character development, boring, did not trust any of the historical information was accurate.
Definitely would not recommend!

This had a nice story but felt very rushed at the end. As an avid reader of all WW2 historical fiction, I wanted more out of this one. It felt like the author was trying to do too much, which led to surface-level aspects of the story that felt forced.
