it's a classic.
One of the Citizen Kane novels; strip-mined for characters and plot points for a century; often to better effect than their original incarnation. Worth a read for the period detail.

hmmm i honestly think i would have to reread the great gatsby to get it more. which i'm not complaining about. ik some people complain about having to read books like this for school and having to analyze them (which is totally valid) but personally i think i would've enjoyed it more if that is what happened. instead of like. just picking it up. still gonna give it five stars though. for reasons i cannot, unfortunately, articulate

The narration is complicated and hard to understand at times, but reading slowly and looking up definitions is worth it to catch the quick and understated irony and careful observations and themes in this book. I’m on my second read-through, and I’m catching even more than I did the first time, and I love it.
I can’t overstate how hilarious the descriptions of people and events are (like, “‘I never was any more crazy about him than I was about that man there.’ She pointed suddenly at me, and everyone looked at me accusingly. I tried to show by my expression that I had played no part in her past”). I really enjoy the subtle humor and well developed themes about upper class shallowness, morality, love and marriage, and ambition. Fitzgerald does not waste words. I’d thoroughly recommend it, but not for a casual read before bed or on a beach; this calls for a little slower and deeper thinking.

This fell so flat and I'm so disappointed.
I WANTED to like this so much but my problem was that the characters and plot just fell so flat. It just felt like nothing the whole time.
The writing itself is beautiful. I give Fitzgerald credit for the beautiful prose, and nothing else.
Hoping his other books will be better.
