hmmm i honestly think i would have to reread the great gatsby to get it more. which i'm not complaining about. ik some people complain about having to read books like this for school and having to analyze them (which is totally valid) but personally i think i would've enjoyed it more if that is what happened. instead of like. just picking it up. still gonna give it five stars though. for reasons i cannot, unfortunately, articulate

The narration is complicated and hard to understand at times, but reading slowly and looking up definitions is worth it to catch the quick and understated irony and careful observations and themes in this book. I’m on my second read-through, and I’m catching even more than I did the first time, and I love it.

I can’t overstate how hilarious the descriptions of people and events are (like, “‘I never was any more crazy about him than I was about that man there.’ She pointed suddenly at me, and everyone looked at me accusingly. I tried to show by my expression that I had played no part in her past”). I really enjoy the subtle humor and well developed themes about upper class shallowness, morality, love and marriage, and ambition. Fitzgerald does not waste words. I’d thoroughly recommend it, but not for a casual read before bed or on a beach; this calls for a little slower and deeper thinking.

This fell so flat and I'm so disappointed.

I WANTED to like this so much but my problem was that the characters and plot just fell so flat. It just felt like nothing the whole time.

The writing itself is beautiful. I give Fitzgerald credit for the beautiful prose, and nothing else.

Hoping his other books will be better.

I read this book a second time because my sister needs to read it for her general ed. literature class and I have decided to read through all her assigned pieces with her, partially to support her and partially to potentially find new things to get interested in. After another reread of this book, I dislike it more than before. It's so much nothing with some beautiful prose, but not beautiful enough to redeem the whole novel. Harsh, I know, but now it's just on to the next book for now. I really, genuinely hope I don't have to pick up this book again (it's her last gen. ed., which is good for me, at least.)

a lot of people make reference to this book and stuff and reading it now i think it is ok but its kinda disappointing how uninteresting the actual main character is. i mean i guess it isn't really fair to call him *main* character since really he's just the observer and the narrator of the events going on, but stilllll hes just so,,, bland. It irritates me. But i guess that not much of a big deal as all the characters irritate me, like all of them. Gatsby is like the biggest simp ever ngl n i dont think he even loves daisy, he's just in love with the idea of her. Also maybe this was normal back in that time frame but the way she treats her child is infuriating, do all rich people do that? AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON TOM I-

startling, unsettling, and so very hopeless.

the prose is beautiful and repulsive, and the characters are… empty. shallow. ugly. all of them. there’s an undercurrent of grotesque, lurid darkness underneath all the glitter, and i find that… fascinating.

i feel like a lot of the thematic elements went over my head (but maybe that’s the point?) but i could just be too young to fully appreciate them.

a very well-written book, albeit one i probably won’t reread.

tw’s:
a few swears (nothing worse than g*dd*mn and b*tch). disturbing descriptions. oh, and like almost everyone is cheating on their spouses.
