inarguably, a great book. a book that leverages the classic tropes of a tragic hero and star crossed lovers to tell a unique, modern american story. and wow, the 1920s in new york city…an undeniably heady setting.
read in the heat of summer 2025, this novel’s investigation of classism, of american “values,” of the fallibility of human memory…oof.

I feel extremely uncultured for not liking this book as much as I "should." I didn't feel any emotional ties to any of the characters and honestly none of their sorrows had any significance to me. Yes, Fitzgerald's descriptions are elaborate and beautiful, but descriptions can't carry any entire book. Maybe it was the style of his writing that didn't appeal to me-his elusive, avoidant system of describing scenes was much similar to what I thought of Gatsby himself. Even though I could imagine the scenes, I was often times encouraged to just Sparknote it or skip ahead to read the ending. Although the events are rather dramatic, the actual book is fairly level-headed. The fights, the defeats, the emotions are all hidden under some film of descriptive words. So yes, it's beautiful and elusive, but not the type of book for me :(
i live in a weird space where i don't trust nick carraway, im not overly fond of daisy buchanan, and i don't think gatsby is that great and yet, this is still one of my favorite books of all time. everything about this book makes me feel,,,,just such a warm brand of happy and the feeling only gets deeper and deeper the more i learn about this book. i wish i had actually intelligent feedback to explain just why i like this book so much. something something american dream something something i like as nick carraway an example of how people think they're an outsider when it comes to social problems that consider class and wealth, neglecting the fact that they're a direct contributor to it something something. i hope that's enough
anyways jordan baker i love you <333 and thank you mrs. k for having us read this book in class and not being mad when i read ahead <333

What a great story! I knew nothing of the plot before reading and was intrigued. I can totally see why this book is so popular.
