okay in all honesty i did not care for this book very much
im only properly getting back into reading and this just made no sense to me and took me SO LONG to read, i usually read books very quickly :(
i think ill have to re read when im a bit older, there were some beautiful quotes and stuff but i feel like i just missed the entire purpose of the book lol

I've heard mixed reviews about this book, the usual love it, hate it, only read it because it was required, etc. Since I went to three different high schools, my canonical lit education was bastardized, so I never actually had to read this. In an effort to familiarize myself (and as a promise to the fiance) with classics, I picked it up.
The beginning was boring. If Fitzgerald had brought this book to a publisher today, I think at least a chapter's worth of unnecessary set up would be cut. I guess the argument for setting the scene could work, but it felt too much like a chore slogging through supercilious names and some of the dryer exposition. That would explain the minus one star for me.
But man, from page 75, I was HOOKED. Fantastic. So much awkward in so many scenes; Fitzgerald made me feel uncomfortable alongside the characters. Very impressive. This is definitely belongs in its place in the American literary canon.
