In the 2001 version there is some use of the n-word :(
My hubby and I loved watching the show Rizzoli and Isles together, and as with all good tv shows based off books, I was compelled to read the novels. The Surgeon is book one in the series. I was a tad disappointed that Isles isn't in book one, but aside from that I loved it. We get to experience what happens to Rizzoli just prior to the start of the show, which gives lots of insight to her character. With lots of suspense this novel firmly falls into the category of murder mystery with a sprinkling of slasher throughout.
It's good to know Rizzoli is the focus of the subsequent books in this series because Moore is so beyond bland and seems to exist purely to say see not all men are bad!! Still really enjoyed this book despite some very early 2000s misogyny sprinkled in but I genuinely don't think the author meant it in any malicious way but maybe I'm just distracted by a really good medical thriller

i feel like i would have liked it better if i didn’t know it was about rizzoli and isles bc that knowledge skewed my expectations. the crime aspect was very good, kept me intrigued. misogyny was a key theme that reflects the time it was written
feels incredibly misogynistic. also the characters felt flat... i liked rizzoli tho. maybe i will continue reading the series just for her

There's no Isles and barely any Rizzoli in this Rizzoli & Isles book...which I didn't realize until about halfway through. Isles comes in the 2nd book apparently, I'll give that one a shot at some point.
It's very technical with its descriptions. I don't need to know all the details of what a doctor does in the ER. I have not connected with any of the characters.
Simply amazing.
The way Rizzoli is treated, makes you wonder how much Tess must have gone through or heard about women and injustice at work place to write so succinctly about it.
Also I could not understand why the series is called Rizzoli and Isles series as Rizzoli hardly ever comes in view through out the book

This book shows why Gerritsen is top of her field. A gripping thriller that will make you want to read all her books. If you like detailed gory thrillers Gerritsen is your girl!
