Have been having something of a thriller/ crime fest recently and looking for good writers having read and enjoyed Kate Atkinson, Sophie Hannah, Nicky French, and others. Listened to a discussion on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour about female crime writers where Jenny Murray recommended this book as terrifying.
Found it gripping if not enjoyable. Gory and gruesome with graphic details of surgical procedures ( Gerritsen used to be a surgeon) and horrific misogynistic crimes. Not for the faint- hearted!

“The most intimate feeling people can share is neither love nor hate, but pain.”

3.5 stars

Summary: Homicide detectives investigate a string of murders/mutilations that seem to be the work of a serial killer who is already dead, having been shot and killed by his last known victim. This final victim, Dr. Catherine Cordell, survived, and works in the emergency department of the city where the new murders have started. Detectives Moore and Rizzoli consult with her on the case, and it soon becomes clear that whoever the new killer is, he is targeting Catherine again.

Noteworthy: female protagonist who is not beautiful! (Rizzoli), BIPOC woman author, author is a former ER doctor

Really enjoyed this, and will continue with the series, it just lacks the deep/ongoing impact for me that I expect from my 4 star reads. Only Rizzoli is in this one, so I assume Isles will be forthcoming later. I like Rizzoli ok so far, she's ballsy and tough, but wasn't really the main character in The Surgeon. I like the medical aspect of this one, and hopefully that will continue throughout the series, as the author is a former ER doctor. Chapters alternate between several different perspectives, but it's done well and isn't confusing. Good, solid, serial killer novel.

good book

I knew that Isles wasn’t in the few few books, but damn, it didn’t feel like Rizzoli was in this one either. All I know about her is that, just like every woman in a male-dominated field, she has a thirst to prove herself and is always on defense. Very one dimensional so far. I don’t know much about this series, and I didn’t watch the show, but it feels like this was a stand-alone novel that became a series. Hoping Rizzoli gets fleshed our way more in the second one. I want to love her like I do Lacey Flint and Kim Stone.

Good read for the beach - fast thriller, good detail, realistic characters.

This was the first book in the Rizzoli & Isle series that the TV show was premised on. The story was compelling and well-written, but Jane Rizzoli's character seemed secondary to that of the male police officers in the book. Maura Isles was not in this book at all.
