(I do not rate memoirs.)
I loved this graphic memoir which told the author's experience with deafness after a childhood illness significantly reduced her hearing. I also appreciated seeing the ways that hearing aids ahve advanced over the years and yet remained similar having once been provided a mike for a student. I will definitely add this one, especially since some of my students saw the book and told me it needs to be in the classroom.

Well-done middle-grades graphic novel/memoir about the author's life after she lost her hearing at age 4 in the 1970s. Some of the themes are universal - feeling like an outsider, bullying, friendship struggles - but the book also provides an personal look at one child's journey with a disability. The author's note provides the caveat that her story is just her story, not intended to represent the experience of all deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals, e.g., the author wore hearing aids, learned to lip read and was never exposed to American Sign Language or deaf culture.
Sweet early/middle grades graphic memoir. The drawings are charming and the message resonates.
Very cute and what a great story! I loved that it referenced a Hostess Cherry Pie--what a delicious treat in the 1980's.

This is probably the second graphic novel I've ever read, and I loved it! The author's story about her childhood and the awkward moments she encountered was heartwarming. Even though I'm not dead or hard of hearing, feeling different sometimes is universal.
I'm really glad I went out of my comfort zone and picked up this sweet graphic novel. I know it's intended for children but I loved it all the same.

Tender, charming, funny, truthful memoir of growing up as a deaf kid. This was such a fun read, and every kid I know who has read this book, loves it.
