Read for Popsugar: A book set around a holiday other than Christmas (it features not only Lunar New Year, but also Valentine's Day!)

I loved the art, I loved the story, and I learned things. I was a little spooked, and a little bit in love.

Borrowed from the library and had to renew it twice before I finally opened the cover. And thank God I finally did, because Lunar New Year Love Story turned out to be utterly enchanting!

First, s/o to LeUyen Pham for bringing the soul of this book to life. Her art drops you straight into the story with illustrations that are evocative and expressive and rhythmic and rich… and the colors! They tell a story of their own.

This is a chunky graphic novel, and for good reason. It touches on so many topics, speaks to so many Asian American experiences, captures so many dynamics - even as the core of the story tracks the shattering and repair of Valentina’s relationship with love.

Ack! Just tender and empowering and full of heart. I’m not sure what I loved most.

The multicultural view of Lunar New Year? Inclusive of Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese tradition?

The small details that are planted throughout the story and one by one, without fail, have their pay-off moment?

The realistic picture of conflict in relationships, and how some things can’t just be brushed away?

Grandma calling in poker debts on vacation in Rome?

There is so much here and it is all wrapped up in a smart, funny, compelling story about lion dancing and love. Gene Luen Yang really knows how to write a story that has humor and levity but will just as easily cut you to the quick. I immediately need a copy for my bookshelves.

I couldn't put this down, it's a 5* book! The emotions and pain felt so real, I don't know how Gene does it

Cute, and longer and more fleshed out than a lot of graphic novels I’ve read lately. Maybe because it’s not middle grade haha. The grandmother character was my favorite
