I will try to responsibly begin, though, by mentioning this book had some darker themes alongside its romance and you should always check content & trigger warnings when reading to make sure a book is for you! Contextually and tracking with the story, I didn't personally have troubles suspending my imagination for the sake of the story being told when these themes came into play, but I could see how this would be a non-starter for someone else. There are things like unfair power dynamics (ie - master/slave) that I personally understood to be intentional and indicative of the time/place/culture of the book's setting. I think knowing that upfront is important to the reading experience, regardless.
Now onto the things I looooooooved about this book! Something I really appreciated about was the way the author Juliette painted us such a clear picture of the world and how the mythos crossed over into the magic abilities we see in play. Like there's still a lot to be explored but I think I have a good grasp on the world from the way she built it in her writing. I also can't speak more highly of the narration for this book! I listened to an ALC of this book and am really glad I did because Blair Dade (Malina) and Kale Williams (Julian) gave a phenomenal performance! I think their narrations made me like this even more.
I'm really excited for the next book now! I want to know what's going to happen next after that ending and look at the next book 👀 Like what's the next move?? I guess I'll have to wait to find out. Side note: I always do this to myself with fantasy series when I choose to read an advanced copy of a Book 1 😩 But it's okay I think it's only going to be three books so we just gotta wait for two more 😅
A huge thank you to NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for an ALC of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts!

I love Juliette Cross books so I was so excited for this Romantasy, set in a Roman inspired backdrop. I really enjoyed Firebird and it did not disappoint!
I love a dual narrative and it was nice getting to know both Malina and Julian. The dragon lore was interesting, particularly the 'half-skin' aspect and I've not seen it in a Roman setting before, which I enjoyed!
I did struggle a bit with the slave/master dynamic between the two of them and a bit of the instalove but do find that makes sense when it comes to fated mates.
This was an enjoyable Romantasy and I'm looking forward to more in the series, especially after the sneak peek - I need to see the next couple's story now!

I devoured this ALC and loved it from prologue to epilogue. The worldbuilding, the wildfire romance, dragons and strong multidimensional MCs all made this a 6-star read for me. Now this is not going to be a book for everyone. It is dark and does have historical enslavement elements accurate to the Roman setting, but if you don't mind reading such themes run, don't walk to pick this book up when it releases on April 8th 2025! I am already pre-ordering the First Edition. It's so beautiful!
I love, love, loved the retelling of Medusa, her sisters and Minerva and the ways it tied into the story. FMC Malina's lore is equal parts beautiful and sad but shows her inner fire and will to keep fighting. While not the strongest physically, she is definitely one of the feistiest FMCs I have read recently. I really loved the way the dragon shifters were described and can't wait to see some art of our MMC and his aunt in her pit. That was a side plot that I especially enjoyed and hope is touched upon again in the future. My mind has already come up with some very satisfying ideas about how that could be finished up. The romance checked all the boxes for me. The devotion, the passion, the protectiveness of both MCs and especially when his dragon speaks. Just yes! Bonus points for all the small details about accurate fashions and fabrics of the times. The end was very enjoyable and not a cliffhanger. And then that very last line....MA'AM! I really hope you are working on book two if you are going to do that to me!
I adore when dual POV is also dual narrated and this was a great example of why. Blair Dade and Kale Williams both brought their characters to life and complimented each other masterfully. I really have to give extra points to Kale because his dragon voice always brought a small shiver of delight down my spine. The narration added a whole additional star to this experience for me with the extra immersion they both added. I really hope they're back for audiobook two!
Thank you Macmillan Audio via Netgalley for an ALC. All opinions are honest and my own.

I was so excited for this the second preorders went open and the gift you all gave me of this eARC is one I am going to treasure. This is easily a 4.5/5 stars for me. I adored this. I felt it was new and an interesting spin on Roman mythology. The characters were well done, the plot drove things forward as it needed to, and the yearning was *chef's kiss*. Forbidden love and fated mates are two of my favorite tropes, so to have them in characters like Julian and Malina was an absolute treat.
Malina is the perfect female main character in a series featuring dragons. To have a FMC who is human but not overpowering what is clearly a species much higher up on the food chain was refreshing in a romantasy/fantasy setting. Her having powers only played it's hand when it needed to and almost as a reminder that she was not helpless. She is intelligent, sneaky, and very resourceful.
Julian was also very refreshing. I think there's been such a turn in MMC in romance and fantasy that having some almost so humanly flawed was an icing on a buff, protective, and dominate cake. His softness with his "slaves" was an immediate thing of beauty due to his love not just being reserved for Malina. I loved the dance of his natural desire to protect and his dragons possessiveness.
The smut was perfect. I liked the slight slow burn aspect of waiting to see the way the two of them gravitated together. They felt so unforced as a couple that the smut felt like that first big breath you get to take when you're swimming under water, if that makes sense? It wasn't too heavy, wasn't too rough, but wasn't too sweet. Their chemistry as characters read so well during these scenes.
I also want to appreciate the historical accuracy. Ms. Cross, the research you must have done. It made it feel so true the time period and helped lock the setting into place. It's bold to not give into the element of modernity in fantasy and this choice truly makes this novel feel like a movie in your mind. Thank you for going that extra mile!
Also, I see you with your little twisty turn you did. I cannot wait to see how that plays out!
The last thing I want to talk about is one I rarely mention because you should not judge a book by its cover. Unless it is this one. The cover art is stunning. That was what originally drew me in when I preordered before I read the summary. The story inside is exactly what I expected with that cover. This is one that is worth keeping as a shelf trophy and displaying so proudly. I cannot wait to see it in person.
Thank you again for this opportunity to eARC. This one was worth the nerves or applying for. I cannot wait to read the physical copy again.

I was SO excited for this book as I love romantasy, dragons and magic so it sounded perfect for me! Unfortunately the story just didn't live up to my hopes for it.
Firebird is about a young woman called Malina who was a dancer in her family's roaming troupe. After her family is killed by Roman Dragons, she uses her magic to help the Celtics in their fight against the Romans. When the Celtics are defeated she comes face to face with a Dragon who she briefly met years before. His name is Julian and he is the nephew of Caesar, the Roman leader. Julian turns into his Dragon form and steals Malina and makes her his slave. But Malina and Julian share a bond and all may not be as it seems with Julian, despite his brutal actions...
The storyline is based in the Roman empire with the leaders and elite being Dragon shifters. They are on a mission to destroy their enemies. Caesar, the leader is a vile man who rapes women infront of audiences, kills whoever he wants and creates laws that only serve the dragon's interests. The politics is pretty straightforward and obvious. There was little depth or clever twists in this aspect. There is also a LOT of violence towards women.
The worldbuilding is also very lacking. Malina has magic but it's used infrequently and we don't know much about it or it's origin. The Dragon's have some background but again there was an information dump at the beginning and then that wasn't really built upon. There are also some parts of the story that could have been really interesting but we were left without much information and it became frustrating. I'm guessing we will learn more in book 2 but I just don't care enough to continue sadly.
The romance was a complete "instalove" trope with a side of "mate". If done well, I don't mind this but because Malina was Julian's slave, it all felt very uncomfortable to me. Especially with "you're mine" and "tell me you're giving yourself to me" being said whilst she is still his slave and there is a power imbalance. I didn't enjoy the sex scenes and the "love" didn't feel believable to me seeing as they know absolutely nothing about each other. Also the use of the words "cunny" and "quim" through the book just made me shudder in revulsion.
I actually didn't mind Malina who I thought was brave. Julian is meant to be a morally grey character but I just couldn't get over him killing innocents and having slaves, even if he does have a reason for it (no spoilers). We just don't really get to know them very well and so everything felt very surface level.
Overall, the storyline, wordbuilding and characters are all lacking in depth. It had some promise but was just executed poorly, a shame as some of the fantasy aspects were interesting. I won't be recommending this book or continuing the series.
Please note that I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Was I expecting to finish this book in less than 24 hours? No, absolutely not. Did I enjoy it? Yes, more than I would have expected. Was it perfect? No, but there is something I liked.
The Roman Empire, the peak of culture around that time. Add dragons, senate politics and a squalid, corrupted emperor that rules them all against a former dancer taken slave by the own flash and blood of the Cesare whom she met years before in her homeland? I'm sat.
First thing first, I'm Italian, it's in my blood to love the Roman Empire, aka my own history, and I did like how the author incorporated many terms and definitions inside the book, not overusing it and at times when needed giving the correct type of description to let readers understand what a specific object was used for. In this case the only thing I would have specified was how the word Mile was used. As in not the American Mile but the Roman Mile, just adding roman would have done the trick for someone who (rightfully) did not know about the difference.
Character-wise I liked Malina more than I initially expected, yes, at times she was too much but unlike other characters her snappiness was well dosed and her sly remarks at times made her more likable than expected. Was she always coerent? Well no. Again, if someone takes you as a slave and for 1/2 book you think about how to escape while at the end you never even try and attempt it (In not saying at the end of the book but around half way) you loose a bit of your backbone and belief, especially for someone who had her second home burned like the first, and for someone that for 3/4 of the book said she doesn't believe in the Roman gods. Julianus on the other hand is probably my favorite character? I think? Character wise he was always extremely supportive of her and did all he could to hide her from his evil uncle and self-proclaimed rival who wanted nothing more than to get rid of him. The only thing I didn't like about him was how easy he gave up the idea of starting the revulution (if we want to compare is gesture to someone else lets compare his move to Xaden Riorson) in terms of throwing away the best chance he had to end the terror reign of his uncle for Malina. Like yes I like you being so protective but at the same time for a Roman General such as yourself this was such a stupid and inaccurate move? Then again we may have to take into consideration that his dragon was probably going to kill him if anything were to happen to Malina.
The story was medium paced and I really did like the small interruptions between the two main characters, the plot too was nice, not overly heavy and I can't wait to see what the next installment of the series will hold for us.

If you’re a Juliette fan, here’s yet another one to fall in love with. Malina and Julian definitely make my list of characters to love. There’s definitely so much at stake when it comes to their relationship and I don’t think death would even keep them apart.
Saddle up for this one!
