It's exactly what you think it is: a group of stories with unexpected endings. This feature serves to make it a real page turner as you wait for something scary, funny, crazy and everything in between. Though its advantages are also in some way its downfall, and quite a few of the stories are predictable as opposed to unexpected. Despite this all of the stories cover incredibly interesting stories and situations outside of what other stories do, with some so ridiculous its funny and some with characters and plot-lines so dark all you can do is read on in horror.
Some of my favourite stories from the book are: Lamb to the slaughter, Royal Jelly, Parsons Pleasure and Edward the Conquerer.
Be prepared for a lot of revenge against bad husbands or men in general, but also be prepared to root for the wife the full way through and get a sense of pride in their success.

i just couldn't get through half of these stories. a couple were good but the rest were dull. i'm still going to try some of his other books for adults though. i've not given up yet!
Great stories. I could guess or nearly guess the ending of most of them, but still great fun to read.
A decent collection of macabre short stories that were often conceptually solid. I loved “The Way Up to Heaven”, “Lamb to the Slaughter”, “Parsons Pleasure” and a few more because they were wacky and wonderful in the true Roald Dahl spirit. However, some of his stories equally lacked this panache with unnecessary details and over explanations that swayed my attention in the wrong direction. Still, a worthy, unique read to end 2020.
Gripping and wildly entertaining stories. Each individual story is perfect for a short reading session.

This is a re-read for me! This book from Roald Dahl is probably the book that got me into reading. One of my teachers gave me it as extra reading when I was in school and I was obsessed. I loved that it had about 10 short stories in one book and how different they all were. After only reading Roald Dahl as a children's author I was shocked that some of them could be so creepy and sinister yet at the same time hilarious and entertaining. The plots in each of the stories are so clever and I think this book started off my love for horror stories and thrillers.
My favourite short stories were "Lamb to the Slaughter", "Dip In The Pool", "Royal Jelly" and "The Landlady."
