i really liked the punchlines in most stories but god the men in this are almost always insufferable. like literally just…stop telling your wives to shut up…ughh…so annoying. the women were mostly not much better lmfao but at least they weren't all bigots 🙄 also dahl himself was problematic so i don't know why i found this surprising at all smh

Loved this book, really dark and twisted short stories that made me laugh, wince, grimace and smirk. Really intrigued to look into more of Dahl's writing for adults!

Very mixed bag. They are all very well constructed stories, and Dahl knows how to keep the tension, but I only liked some of these. There's a lot of sexist stereotypes in this as well, but the stories were published between the 50s and the 80s, so I kept going anyway. I wouldn't say I hated this reading experience, but it was like a rollercoaster: some of these I liked, and some I didn't.
Roald Dahl is one of the only writers who I feel truly understands dark humor.
There is an art to making macabre, sadistic, murderous tales funny. He gets it.

Never as good as the first time. My premature senility was an aid as I remembered very few of these stories. They were just not as good as I remembered. But still an entertaining read over the holidays.
