It might be because I watched the movie adaptation firsthand or I'm not that particular fond of Stephen King's shorter stories lol, but the ending was eh to me. The writing definitely sets the mood though.
On the plus side, Stephen King gives Joe Hill's characters more depth and heart, while Joe Hill gives Stephen King's prose a much needed brevity and modern sensibility. On the (sorta) negative side, it's one of the most disturbing things I've read all year. Which I think was the point, but still...I don't shock easily. This one was pretty gory.
Meh. Maybe I'm just over Stephen King. It was just like all the other Stephen King--everyone is a broad stereotype, there are NO interesting or complex characters, everyone's internal dialog sounds the same and is full of literary and pop culture quotes, and you know from the beginning that the good guys aren't going to win. This one was also too much like The Ruins, which was better.

I enjoyed this! It's a bit short to write an actual full review though. I didn't know about this, until I got a youtube ad with the trailer for the movie. Now having read it, I wonder how they made a full length movie with this little material. Time to find out I guess!
Perfect short halloween read, with all the necessary gore and mindfuck that you need.

Short horror story from King and son. Bother and sister Cal and Becky are on a road trip when they hear a call for help issuing from the tall grass. As they enter to help, terror ensues.
Seriously, writing a synopsis for a short story is tough! This one is uber gory and creepy! Plus, it comes with samples of both authors' upcoming works, DR. SLEEP and NOS4A2.

short, sweet, gory, excellent. watched the Netflix movie first, the movie was more confusing than the novella. still a great read!
The beginning was genuinely creepy, as the characters slowly realized the seriousness of the situation they were in and their horror mounted. But as the book went on, it lost me, and I found myself saying “that’s it?” by the end.
It was a quick listen, and I don’t regret it, but nothing to write home about.
