I still think about this book today. After it was over I couldn't think clearly. I was so shocked and confused by it all. This was my first Stephan King book, so forgive me if I'm being dramatic, but I really loved it. I really liked the character's and I was sufficiently unsettled.

Might be an unfair assumption, but this short story definitely felt ill-formed; it felt like King and Hill were trying to instill revulsion and perhaps the same fear as "Children of the Corn," but it felt rushed and didn't hit well as horror - what hit more was the horror of reading something revolting where the author takes obvious pleasure in dwelling on horrific details, but there was nothing particularly chilling or any explanation of what was happening at all. The Netflix movie was just as bad, but at least it tried to attempt explanation.

Certainly one of the more truly horrific horror stories I've read in a while.

*book and movie review in one*

This was such a dark read. This was a short, gory, and creepy read. I thought it had the perfect amount of details and kept me engaged page after page. We follow a brother and sister who get lost in a tall grass field and seemingly cannot get out no matter what they do.

The movie took a slightly different path, but it had helped to have read the book so I found it was easier to follow. I don't want to spoil much of it, so, just know there are a few different characters in the movie and a slight difference in the plot. Still enjoyable!

What I loved about this book...just how creepy 62 pages could be! Evil lurks around every corner and has you gasping and yelling at the characters with every page! If you heard a child calling for help in a field would you go and try to help? That is what gets the brother and sister duo into trouble in the first place...

As I previously mentioned there is some gory detail so just be warned. I feel like if you're picking up this book to begin with you're probably going to expect that, so no big deal. How it all ends is such a treat!

4 stars. I read this in no time at all and honestly was a little spooked at the end of it all. I highly recommend you read this versus watching the movie. If you have the time, do both (but book first!).

This novella was very very creepy. Great on audio.

Okay, seriously, this is probably one of the top three or four creepiest Stephen King short stories ever. (Ask me at the end of the year and I can give you a top five, but for right now, the only one I can think of that's scarier is The Boogeyman, in Night Shift.)

I'm one of those people who isn't very fond of nature (which is actually a huge understatement) and this is the reason why. There's this insane field of grass, and it can get you lost. And turned around. And oh sweet God, there are things in the grass. Bad, creepy, hungry things.

I don't even want to think about it.

This is kind of expensive for a short story (about $3.50 I think, or $4) but it's very much worth it. Well, until it's time to sleep and you close your eyes and all you can see is grass. Then it'll pretty much suck. But until then, recommended.

"The tall grass knows everything."

Equal parts creepy and bizarre. The beginning was fantastic and very suspenseful. From when they heard the little boy screaming for help, to the first entrance into the grass, and then immediately getting separated - I was truly panicked. There was almost a claustrophobic like feeling while reading the characters trying to navigate their way through the grounds.

The second half of this story was where things got a little more surreal. The ending was a bit abrupt for me and I would have liked to see the concept of the rock explained a bit further. I don't think there was enough denouement to make me fully satisfied, but nonetheless, this was a super quick and thrilling read - perfect for the beginning of the Halloween season. I'm excited to watch the Netflix adaptation!

This story was not bad, but nothing special and, like many things King has put out lately, it feels like a retread of things he's done before. If you're a fan of King (or Hill), you pretty much know what you're getting into.

On the other hand, it is of interest (to me, at least) that in a 40 page story, they managed to work in one fridged woman, a handful of rape threats, a bloody and graphic miscarriage by beating, and one somewhat off-color remark about how Muslims pray.
