Not sure how I feel about this book. Very different and weird, but strangely good?

MAJOR SPOILERS

I have never read a book that is more spot on with its depiction of the fae than this book. Kathryn Ann Kingsley has honestly perfected writing bad guys as there is not a single good fae in her book, only selfish and less selfish ones. Valroy is not nice, or sweet, or romantic, and the few things he does do for Abigail require payment, deals, or are for his own selfish reasons. If I'm being truthful, the only time I really wanted her to end up with him was when she chose to die in the mortal-eating flowers and he begged her to stay (Probably also for selfish reasons, but his words were so sweet).

Unfortunately, her bad guys are too bad for me to enjoy the book as much as I wanted to. The romance is nonexistent, and by my research, doesn’t exist until book 4. The spice is also relatively low level, just a few passionate kisses, dirty words, and some grinding.

I can see this being a favorite series for someone who likes their main couple to hate each other, but at the time of reading this, I just wanted some fantasy romance with actual romance in it.

I found the character's personalities all a bit bland and there wasn't a very interesting plot

I gave this book two attempts, solely on the merits of the cover, and I'm giving up.

This read like a play-by-play description for the cinematographers to set the stage. We really don't need a step by step instruction of how to make chicken soup, complete with the slaughtering of the chicken thank you.

(On a completely ridiculous note, as a vegetarian, I got a bit of an ick with the cold open of cutting off the chicken's head. Which to be fair, was later slightly rectified by the FMC's inner monologue of "honour the animal life you've taken by making use of every piece of it". Which, respect, I can roll with that.)

MMC's inner monologue on the other hand gave me cringe. Him laughing at stupid shit gave me more cringe. Cringe is not attractive. Moving on.

I unfortunately had to DNF this book. I absolutely love dark fantasy/dark romance and have no triggers. I love fae and all things fantasy. It was the pacing of the story that really did it for me. I felt that everything was rushed and I wanted to know more about who our main characters were before diving into the story. Valroy was just like hey I want you, I’m taking you and it didn’t feel natural.

I couldn’t connect with Abigail or Valroy and found them both to be immature. Valroy I thought would be more direct and mature for how old he is, but instead he came across as a f boy.

While I didn’t personally enjoy it, others might. If you like something fast paced that gets straight to the point, then I think this is for you. Something was just missing in the first 100 pages for me though and I couldn’t keep going. I like the idea of the story so if the author writes a new series in the future I would be willing to give it a try.

Fae and their consent and trick issues made for a very frustrating read, but the little witch never gave up. Definitely a darker romance that is on the verge of Stockholm. Fortunately the FMC was strong and learned from her mistakes. Now the question is will passion and possibly love be enough to stop the end of all.
