A celebration of self-discovery and acceptance, individuality, Dolly Parton, relationships, and more...all set in small town Texas. For me, what's not to love??
Willowdean is selfish and insecure, and it drives nearly everyone she cares about away. It even nearly drove me away. It makes her real, but it doesn't make her likeable. But, I knew in the end she would have to turn it around, so I stuck with it to see how the pageant ended.
Such a good book! Willowdean is a fabulous character and excellent role model for young folks. At times it was painful to read because it was so awkward, but that's all part of being a teenager. Such a good book.

I don’t know if it was too close to home or just not quite as witty as I was hoping. I enjoyed the premise of it, but I wasn’t huge on the self deprecating loop. I appreciate that it doesn’t just go away, but I felt like it was overdone in this story.

Just ok. The start of the book was very promising and filled with body positivity but later in the book it delved into a self-pitying main character who kept making things worse for herself
This is the first book that made me prefer the movie over the book

Cute book, but I found that it fell a bit flat at times.
So cute and sweet. A fun little free library find. Excellent YA love triangle drama and who doesn't love pageant shenanigans and Dolly Parton-themed drag shows?! I think I enjoyed it better than the movie though in the movie you get to hear the songs.
