I devoured this book in two sittings. Beautifully translated prose that describes the internal and external world equistely. A masterful mystery told from the perspective of memory lost and gained, love and family.

Banana Yoshimoto is a great storyteller and the book felt timeless—I had completely forgotten it was first published in the 1980s. I just wasn't a fan of the romance between the main character and her brother (they are not blood-related, but still, yuck). I will likely give other Banana Yoshimoto books a try because I did like her writing style and the way she brings characters to life. This one just wasn't for me.

I liked the idea of this book, HOWEVER:

I hated the fact the Yayoi and Tetsuo are romantically involved with eachother, even though they were raised as brother and sister. I get they arent blood related but thats basically incest??? But the author also made it really ambiguous as to if Yayoi and Yukino were ever actually adopted by their, now, parents, sometimes it was mentioned they were taken in, and one time it mentioned adoption (help). Why would you make them kiss, why why why (ugh).

I also hated Yukino's relationship with Masahiko (I actually dont even remember if that was his name). He was a MINOR (and she is an ADULT) when they started dating (!!!!), and now hes obsessive over her and she wants nothing to do with him, HELLO?!
I also did not like Yukino anyways idk.

The book ended so weirdly, so many questions were left unanswered and I guess Im gonna give three stars???

Yeah it wasnt necessarily a BAD book but it wasnt great either (whatever man).

Not as strong as her other more famous novel banana. It is still incredibly well written and has an amazing story.
