It's amazing how yoshimoto can keep me entranced and absorbed in a novel so short. In terms of yoshimoto's writing her brevity is never a hinderence to the depth of character created.

this book was a perfect late night read, with atmospheric diction, grounded characters, and an intriguing story. i am kind of obsessed with yoshimoto's writing style and will be checking out her other works for sure.

HOWEVER. many points off for the problematic and entirely unnecessary romances.
if you have to say "it's not Technically incest," then maybe you shouldn't write it in a positive way! also, the teacher-student relationship? eugh.
ignoring that, this is a really lovely story.

a pained 3⭐️

Beautifully written but felt like Looking For Alaska X Every Murakami book ever. I love Banana Yoshimoto but this one was not it.

“But they’re adopted siblings, so technically it isn’t incest” If you have to say “technically”, it’s probably not a good sign

This was a frustrating read. The concept was intriguing, and I liked the beginning, but the romance was completely unnecessary and uncomfortable. I did, however, really like the fluid, meandering writing style which makes me think I ought to try another of the author’s books in the future.
