I read this on Audiobook so it was narrated by the author. It took me a while to get used his voice. I had just listened to The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher narrated by Carrie Fisher and I kept thinking they were the same person and losing track of what I was listening to. I was feeling bad about confusing David Sedaris’s voice with a woman’s when he said in his book that that very thing often happens to him and his brother. That part was funny!
I tried really hard to like this book and was anticipating a rollicking good time with some poignant moments thrown in for spice but I just didn’t find it that funny. It’s probably because I just didn’t relate to Mr. Sedaris that much. I’m sure to another person it would be very funny. I found it downright boring and at times all the way disgusting (I could not handle him wanting to feed his tumor to a turtle!) There were some poignant moments, however around the death of his sister and his mother.

I've always wanted to read something by David Sedaris and this audio version became available on my library app when I needed something for my morning walks. It was sad, funny, irreverent and not at all politically correct and I enjoyed it. It's really a book of short stories about his life experiences. The topics ranged from death of a parent, suicide, aging, gay marriage, familial relationships and the purchase of a beach home "The Sea Section" that becomes the getaway for the family. This would not be for everyone because some sections are actually quite gross (discussion of a tumour) and as I mentioned he's not politically correct so I can see people struggling to find his brand of humour funny. He's opinionated and not afraid to let anyone know his, however he loves his family and a lot of his vulnerability (like most of us) worrying about them is his Achilles heel. I liked the chapters where he was in front of a live audience best. A fairly quick audio read that kept me entertained.
