Kinda tired so here's an messy list of things I loved about this comic:
- LOVE that Clint gets defensive when the interviewer starts questioning Kate's leadership capabilities. It's so sweet. And the interview itself is a really fun way to begin the issue and get us settled in this world. I picked this up because I was obsessed with Hawkeye: Kate Bishop and I think this storyline kind of picks up from there which is pretty exciting. It's all very familiar and casual and honestly focusing on the problems of fictional superheroes is very therapeutic.
- "Do you know how many times Kate has almost gotten killed for you people?" "Doesn't that mean she isn't very good at this?"
- Kate's dialogue has the same humour but barely concealed panic that I've come to associate with her. She has every situation Barely under control but I very much relate to that. And it's refreshing to have characters who don't just stride in and know how to solve every problem. Kate is very much still figuring things out and that definitely makes me feel better about myself (I have nothing figured out).
- Also America Chavez is in this!!! I remember her from Young Avengers (which is another amazing series) and actually this comic has a similar dynamic to that series - i.e. good banter, young superheroes being badass, etc. etc.
- I like seeing this side to Kate where she has to make tough decisions as a team leader because in the Hawkeye comics she's more used to lone-wolfing it and sometimes collabing with Clint but that often goes sideways too.
- The twist with B.R.O.D.O.K was fucking hilarious. (On a related note: WHY IS HIS HEAD SO BIG?!)
- Kate: "I welcome all stories of your failure."
Clint: "I'm sure you do."
- Also the bit where they're funding this team using reality TV show money and they go on a late night show?? GENIUS. This comic is full of pop culture references.

to all the old farts that read this then decided to critique it for being for younger audiences… this clearly wasn’t for you ?! i personally loved it, it was fun also it was cool seeing so much lgbtq rep !!

Clean, stylish art and a neat story concept of West Coast Avengers funding their superhero team through reality TV. Humorous and light, I enjoyed the little character interactions and details (God bless Thompson for giving Clint his hearing aid). Wish there was a third volume to flesh out the narrative better and make it feel like a fully realized story, but it was fun nonetheless.

Kate Bishop aka Hawkeye sets up operations in Cali and forms the new West Coast Avengers with Clint Barton (also aka Hawkeye), best friend America Chavez, newbie and Bishop's boyfriend Fuse, wild card Gwenpool, and former X-Men Kid Omega. Financially backed by reality tv money and anxious to prove themselves, their first mission is no small feat (sorry puns) and involves a giant woman on the rampage!

I mean, I'm probably being generous with the rating because it was a very chaotic intro... but it was a really fun read! I'm a fan of the group and the story was light-hearted and silly, which what I expected from the cover. The group dynamic is promising and I love the art style. Kinda sad that there's only 2 volumes in the series but I'm in it for ride no matter how short.

Not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed by this TPB. I really enjoyed the first issue of this series, and was excited for the collected edition. However, the story gets lost in a boring villain plot and loses sight of what made the set-up so fun in the first place-- the team of characters! I wanted a lot more group interaction and learning to work together as a team in the field and as friends outside of it. The reality TV show format could have been integrated more extensively than it was.

I'm not surprised to discover that this series was cancelled, but I am a bit sad. Feels like wasted potential. I still feel so tempted to give this 3 stars because I really do love the characters, and I think their voices are written well. But I was pretty bored overall. 2.5 stars.

Rivera’s America run spoiled me. Usually I like Thompson, but she fell into the trap a lot of writers do, where America becomes one-dimensional and her only personality traits are punching and speaking Spanish. I haven’t read any Gwenpool, but I thought she was funny in this.
